Re: Freedom Day
Yeah, but doesn't the UK have a population of around 70,000,000? Just googled that right now. So that it's still under 200,000 seems like all these extreme measures are not worth it, is the point I think clearspira has made. I'm sure you could even find interviews out there with people whose family members DIED from COVID who feel the same way. Either way, this is not a world-ending virus, and if you look at something like the 1918 pandemic, relative for its day, you see how much worse it was then. Technology and our methodology has come very far since then, if we've kept the numbers down this way.

Re: Freedom Day
You, again, are missing the basic fundament of the number: This number is after all safety-measures. What you are argueing there for is, to remove airbags, seat-belts and crumple zones from vehicles, because it makes the car more expensive, while also abolishing all rules of traffic, because it's raising the bar for getting a driver's license. That this is an insane statement to make, should be obvious. You want the results of the Spanish Flu? That is how you get them.

Re: Freedom Day
I stand corrected. But I'd never presume to tell people how to live their lives, and I don't live in the UK. I do know here in my slice of the US, masks are still just optional in most places that aren't public health facilities. And I'm fine with that. Some other states probably have it better or worse. I hear the Southern states were really pounded hard by COVID and all the economic damages to come with it.

You're the one calling it a "slave muzzle", for Hecate's sake.

I wouldn't presume to tell people what to do with their penises but I'm still in favor of laws that prohibit waving them around in public.

Not comparable. A penis is the male reproductive organ and obscene outside any nudist gathering or publicly-approved nudist areas. People with vaccines have every reason to ditch the masks with lesser chance to spread a disease that was already hardly the most lethal type in viral history compared to Ebola, Hanta, Rabies, and the like. Sounds like you're being as paranoid as any right-winger. But if this were conformity to the social cause of, say, wearing a white armband as a means of solidarity for aborted fetuses every year (sans the awful, completely indefensible crimes of killing doctors and bombing clinics), you wouldn't accept that, would you? I'm actually pro-choice, but that issue is not black and white and I'd be foolish to claim it is. Gotta say, I expect a bit more for what they call the "public health crisis of the century." If this is what they consider a public health crisis, what would a supervirus be that literally turns our organs into liquid shit? Those things are scary as hell and the reaction to COVID makes me feel we're too weak to really handle such a hypothetical viral outbreak. I REALLY hope we don't get one of those, because if we do, we're FUCKED.

Then why are you advocating for more economic damage (both going forward and in the future) by downplaying the effects of COVID?Yukaphile wrote: ↑Mon Aug 30, 2021 12:00 pm I stand corrected. Re: Freedom Day
Because people need to be free to live their lives, especially without moral judgments from the modern day puritans. You wanna judge those walking around without masks who are anti-vaxxers, that's one thing, even though simple honesty demands it is their libertarian right. But for those who have gotten the shots, who don't wanna mask, the judgments from moral puritans is just going to backfire if the issue is truly about social responsibility during a public health crisis. Because you need to respect people's freedoms. As I said, this isn't a supervirus that will liquefy your internal organs or mess with your head and inflame your brain. And really, I'm thinking of the pandemic from a hundred years ago. They WANT you to think things are worse than ever, that's the image you see from the news all the time. But relative to the populations of 1918, Influenza was far more destructive compared to the seven billion we have now. It's just some places have handled it well, and others have not. And there's always spins to the way one interprets the data. Scientific data is still being processed and it will be years before we have all the facts. So let the numbers keep coming in. They will continue to unfold the story.

Re: Freedom Day
Have you not gotten the news, that being vaccinated doesn't prevent you from spreading the fucking disease still?! What the fuck dude... Masks are not there to protect you, they are there to protect others!Yukaphile wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 2:58 am Because people need to be free to live their lives, especially without moral judgments from the modern day puritans. Your actions affect me. It's not a Slave Muzzle, it's a reasonable precaution. We tried the "Okay you don't need to wear a mask if you had the vaccine approach", and all the people who refused to get vaccinated used that as a cart blanch excuse to not mask up either.Yukaphile wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 12:56 am Not comparable. The mask is not forcing you to raise its children, harvest its sugar cane, or fight wildfires for it. Holy Hecate's unbleached asshole, I can't even force you to do anything. I'm saying "You should probably still were a mask" and you're acting like armed troops are waiting outside your house.
And this is NOT a social cause. The mask serves a medical function. It obstructs viral matter from leaving your face. That is the difference. And please, think veyr, very carefully before you invoke armbands.
The virus isn't scare enough for you? I'm sorry that the real life public health crisis that kills people and has who knows how many horrible, long-term effects is just eating up red blood cells and shutting down lungs instead of doing Cronenberg movie shit.
I posit that you are setting the bar too bloody high for what counts as a serious public health crisis, and too bloody low for what counts as an unreasonable imposition on personal freedoms.
