Why is the gender or sex of a street-sweeper important in the first place? I mean, beyond the obvious answer of: Men are universally more likely to take physically-demanding jobs. Hint: You are not going to fix this by saying: "We don't hire straight men for this job."

Well, if you're not going to take "equality as a positive good", then there's always the fact that jobs in public sanitation pay well for low skill and such.

You are not going to fix this by saying: "We don't hire straight men for this job."

Because it is formal discrimination, while claiming they do not discrimninate in hiring. Equity in results is a bad value, as the easiaest way to attempt to accnpmlish it is to set aside all other values in individual rights and equal treatment.
