God of War's Norse Saga to End After 2 Games

Post by Winter »

After God of War 4 was released I remember the game's director saying that he had planned and set up at least 9 games worth of content for God of War and with God of War: Ragnarök this 9 part saga will be wrapped up in game 2 of the Norse Saga.

Now in all fairness the previous director could have meant that he had set up games outside of the Norse Saga (there are hints of other lands such as Egypt and China throughout the game) but the way he talked about it I got the impression that he meant the Norse saga as he kept talking about the Norse Mythology and how the Norse Pantheon's relationship with Kratos and Atreus would develop.

I got the impression that the second game would focus on Fimbulwinter and have Freya and Thor as the main threats and game 3 would be Ragnarök and, well, I was kinda right. Freya and Thor will be the main antagonist and we'll be spending most of our time in Fimbulwinter it's just Ragnarök will be the second game's third act.

I mentioned before that I appropriated Rian Johnson's honesty about The Last Jedi, he didn't lie to the fans, he stated what he was intending with the story and the characters and didn't try to contradict Hamill's criticisms. And the same thing here as the reason for why the Norse Saga is ending after two games was stated by Ragnarök's new director... Because he's lazy.

Okay, I kid, the real reason is because it took 5 years to develop Ragnarök and he just didn't think there was enough to really make a third game so he felt it would be better, from a real world practical standpoint, to end the Norse Saga with the second game as Ragnarök was set up at the end of GOW4 is he saw no harm in it. And one thing I do like from the what I've seen in the trailers is how the new director is working to make this a Sequel to GOW4.

In my opinion, the ultimately failing of TLJ and the Star Wars Disney Sequel Trilogy as a whole it that it's NOT a sequel. To focus on the former, for whatever reason, Johnson had decided to just disregard the ideas that The Force Awakens had set up and also to resolve the whole Trilogy at act two and for whatever reason the higher-ups at Disney and Lucas Film gave their blessing for that. So, instead of following up on anything TFA set up TLJ just did it's own thing and did little to nothing with what came before.

Snoke finishing Kylo's training, never mentioned. The Knights of Ren, forgotten. Finn having overcome his fear of the First Order and standing against them, TLJ just retreads this arc. Han's death, barely talked about and forgotten about 20 minutes into the film. Rey's training under Luke, altered to so Luke (and by extension Johnson) can rant about the Jedi. Rey's past, tossed aside.

GOWR is mainly about the conflict with Freya and Thor along with tying up all the major threads GOW4 left like the ultimate fate of the Giants, Týr's arc and the fate of the Norse Pantheon. And most important of all the relationship with Kratos and his son Atreus continues to be the main focus of the game.

It remains to be seen how this will all play out but I'm curious to see how this duology will play out. Video games have the advantage of having RIDICULOUS Runs times with some being only 10 hours to being 200 hours. I doubt GOWR will be that long (more likely it will run in at about 20 or 30+ hours) but I do think that will be given enough to wrap this story up.

To go back to Star Wars, Lucas had decided to end his 9 part saga at Episode 6 so he could focus on his family. With Star Wars all he needed to focus on was the Vader/Luke relationship, resolve the conflict with the Empire, deal with the Emperor himself and resolve the mystery of the "Other" Yoda mentioned. GOWR just needs to resolve the Freya and Kratos conflict, deal with the rest of the Norse Pantheon and resolve the Kratos and Atreus arc. So long as those are all executed competently I think GOWR will be okay, maybe not perfect but still I think it will be good. :)

Good it won't be padded for a trilogy.
