The Girl in the Woods: The New Hocus Pocus?

This is either going to be amazingly stupid or stupidly amazing.

This is, without a doubt, looks like it will be one of the most New 10's show I've ever seen. We got pointless jump scares, we got the new "Totally Radical" Dialogue, we got gays as the leads and everyone talking seriously and the "Please, PLEASE take us seriously" style of filming. It feels like this was a show made by creatures that have heard of the strange animal called "The Humon" but have no real understanding of us. And honestly, just based on the trailers, that's kinda makes it weirdly endearing.

For whatever reason I'm reminded of Hocus Pocus which is a VERY 90's movie, which also hit a lot of 90's cliches and yet it's endearing and charming. To quote Confused Matthews "Hocus Pocus can no longer be considered a Cult Classic it's just a Classic". Back in 2017 (I think) the Sanderson Sisters appeared as the main stars at Walt Disney World's "Mickey's not so Scary Halloween Party" where they were put ahead of other villains like Maleficent, Captain Hook and Hades. Go to any store during October and I guarantee you will see something Hocus Pocus related merch right next to the likes of Ghostbusters, Sleepy Hollow and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Hocus Pocus is one of my all time favorite Halloween movies and I watch it every year even though it is rather flawed but in this case those flaws helped make the film weirdly timeless. It's dated but not in a bad way, its heroes are standard generic 90's kid heroes but all the actors are given genuinely good performances (not great but good) the Sanderson sisters are a complete joke but they are memorable and fun to watch. And the effects have mostly held up with Binks still looking pretty good for early 90's CGI so it doesn't pull you out like it would with other films.

So, I have to wonder, will The Girl in the Woods end up the same way? I guess the only way to really know is to wait and see, (it took Hocus Pocus decades to buildup its popularity and it had the advantage of being a Disney owned property that had a strong enough cult following to show it every Halloween after its release). I think it will come down on how well the show is done. If it has some effort put into it and sticks to it's silly premise it should be able to stand out.

Still, just based on the trailer I get the feeling this film is going to get a few people riffing on it just because of how cheesy it looks.

Hocus Pocus' popularity is heavily nostalgia-driven. Kids who grew up with it showing it to their own kids. Whatever the next Hocus Pocus is will be something from twenty years ago everyone not in the original target market already forgot about.

I mean I guess this could be the 2050s Hocus Pocus, but there's going to be a few in between.

I saw Hocus Pocus in theaters upon release, and it's nothing special. I join hammerofglass in calling nostalgia shenanigans.

Isn't Stranger Things the new Hocus Pocus? Self-referential nostalgia and everything.

Don't get me wrong; I saw Hocus Pocus in theaters and have watched it every year since. It's part of a little set of nostalgic Halloween movies I watch every year with my sister even though we're in our mid thirties now (sequel next year WOOOT!). I'm just saying there are other examples coming before something that's new now comes back because people have been experiencing happy childhood memories this whole time. It's been what, 30 years?
