Apparently there was no gun expert or handler on set. They didn't hire one. Also alot of the crew including Baldwin walked off the set in protest of safety issues.
Are you kidding me I thought that was a requirement with any movie involving guns after what happened with Brandon Lee back in the 90s?
I can't tell you. I can only go from what I have read so far about it.
I got nothing to say here.

That is fair I just assumed it was required but I could be wrong as well.

Third hand source says the union employees walked hours earlier. And non-union workers took their place. So the issue is getting muddier.

Don't know what happened here but in the case of Brandon Lee IIRC something had got jammed in the gun and the blank was still powerful enough to shoot it out at a fatal speed. Sounds exactly like why you should have an expert around to make sure that doesn't happen...

I suppose it'll be hard to get quite the same movement and reaction if just adding the shot in post production.

Notably all the gun effects in the John Wick movies are added in post. I don't think it's coincidental that the director of those films, Chad Stahelski, was Brandon Lee's body double.

Could also be a practical point. I know I read it related to this issue. But even firing blanks you are supposed to have a twenty foot distance from the muzzle to another person. John Wick was showing close in shooting and would have been dangerous even with blanks.

Blanks aren't perfectly safe, as that actor in the 80s who put a blank-loaded gun to his head and pulled the trigger for a joke found out. They still produce explosions that can propel debris nearly as fast as a bullet, and the shockwave is no joke at close distances.

As sorry as I am to hear about this, I found it funny when it was first reported: NPR had a brief story about a political thing, then a long breathless discussion of a Hollywood gun accident. Oh yeah, they really have their priorities straight.

Learned something new about guns. Not sure what you mean by priorities though. Are you saying it's more important than politics just because it happened in Hollywood? We have Entertainment News and the like for that.

Coming from a more rural area where people get gun safety drilled into our heads by the time we're twelve (aka legal hunting age) the casual disregard for basic precautions I'd expect anyone to do without thinking in that account of events is driving me up the wall. Everyone involved was being an idiot in really obvious ways and a person lost their life because of it.

I mean intellectually I know hundreds of people are killed and tens of thousands are injured by accidental discharges every year, it happens, but this is the equivalent of hearing the fatal car accident happened when the driver was innocently driving on the sidewalk. WTF did they think was going to happen?
