Re: The Orville
I really liked this episode, the system they had on that planet is just an extreme version of sesame credit in China and it actually got quite disturbing. Would be interesting to see them making contact with other civilizations a few hundred years down the line, while still keeping the system, this could make for really interesting scenarios.

Re: The Orville
I liked it. It criticized a certain use of democracy in an intelligent way; that assumes a little sophistication on the part of the audience. The solution in general terms was pretty predictable, but it was done in a nice way.
Also, IMO the humor is getting better. "Those were dark times."
Minor nitpick -- the badge code shown in the "dry hump dance" has only six digits, but everybody 18 and over is required to have a badge. If this is one of those one-global-government planets so common in science fiction, the population on that planet is fairly low.
I guess downvotes may add a lot to those first-date jitters.

Considering how often Starfleet officers were outed on alien worlds, not too surprising.Redem wrote:Also The union SUUUCKS at infiltrating alien socety
My first thoughts was of ancient Athenian democracy when I saw this episode. Which is why I was surprised when Issac claimed that no society had formed a direct democracy. He could have meant that one hadn't been encountered on such a scale, and, being an alien AI, he might not have not been familiar with that part of Earth history. Though considering he's on the Orville to study organics, one would think history would be one of the subjects he looked up.pornomancer90 wrote:I really liked this episode, the system they had on that planet is just an extreme version of sesame credit in China...

The athenian model isn't very democratic by modern standard so maybe that is what he was refering to.Archanubis wrote:Considering how often Starfleet officers were outed on alien worlds, not too surprising.Redem wrote:Also The union SUUUCKS at infiltrating alien socety

"If you get shot up by an A6M Reisen and your plane splits into pieces - does that mean it's divided by Zero?

Re: The Orville
Why do you keep bringing up Sesame Credit. This is not similar in any way. Sesame Credit is a system where loyalty to the state is rewarded.
This Orville planet is a critique of today's offense culture. Keyboard warriors that seek to destroys peoples lives for saying the wrong thing, or having an unpopular opinion.

Re: The Orville
I found it a very relevant episode and commentary on modern society.
In other news, Fox picked The Orville up for a second season.

The episode started pretty bad with the seriously annoying kid, but it got a lot better as it went on

I did like Issac's interactions with Claire's kids in this episode. I about cracked up when he threw the older kid's hand-held game and shot it like it was a clay target. I wonder how many parents have wanted to do the same to their kids games and phones.

Re: The Orville
Great that it's been picked up for another season. I've enjoyed season 1 Orville better than season 1 ST:TNG. Not that this means Orville's season 2 will be better than TNG's season 2, but I think Orville also improved a lot during season 1, so I'm cautiously pessimistic. That's as close to optimism as I get.
I just saw "Into the Fold," and I liked this episode the best so far. I also think the title makes a nice play on words.

You need to select bad people to make as bad a show as TNG S1 in 2017.Darth Wedgius wrote:Great that it's been picked up for another season. I've enjoyed season 1 Orville better than season 1 ST:TNG.
