Is Amphibia Setting Up A Polyamory Romance 2: Olivia & Yunan

Post by Winter »

So, in the most recent episode of Amphibia there is a moment where Marcy is shown her greatest fear which is Anne and Sasha telling her that they will never forgive her for what she's done and want nothing to do with her... In this vision there is a poster of Prom and when Fear version of Anne and Sasha merge together their shirt takes the form of a heart... I'm not saying that this is a deliberate ship tease for Sashannarcy but, well, it's kinda hard to NOT notice it.

And keep in mind that at this point we have a major villain, Mr. X, who is being played by real life drag queen RuPaul and there are hints that Mr. X is himself a drag queen and that he and his partner Jenners are either in a relationship or have feelings for one another. And the episode after that we had a gay couple propose to one another onscreen and a lesbian couple called the IT girls who have been set up as ongoing secondary characters.

Thus we return to the question, is Amphibia setting up a Polyamory Romantic Relationship between Anne, Sasha and Marcy?

I'm asking because I am a romantic and might be seeing something that isn't there because, again, romantic I tend to get carried away and try to restrain myself when it comes to romances in any series because I often find that I'm just setting myself up for disappointment. That's why, as fun as I think the relationship would have been, I never really seriously considered Kara and Lena in Supergirl as a serious ship because I figured the show runners would never go through with it because they had no interest in said relationship outside of a friendship. Which is fine, they never really tried to tease anyone with a romance and most of the time it didn't come off as ship teases.

But Amphibia? It's not really being subtle (again the Prom poster and the Heart makes it seem like the show runners are teasing at the idea at the very least) and I wonder if the show is setting it up or if I'm just being a hopeless romantic.

Thoughts?

I mean, it would be nice, but Owl House got cut short for being too gay. I kind of doubt Disney is ready to have polyamory, or that hack writers are ready to let go of love triangles.

There's actually been no indication that TOH's cancellation has anything to do with the show having open queer characters but rather that the show is far to serialized for a Disney Channel show. It's not a good reason but as far as I know the show having a bi lead, a lesbian love interest and a nonbinary supporting character didn't impact the higher-ups decision to cut the show short.

And in regards to Love Triangles plenty of good writers use them and there are even a few that I would say is not only good but great and adds to the story (Final Fantasy 7 and it's remake is possibly the best example). And even if it's bad it can lead to something good (the AWFUL LT in The Legend of Korra led to Korrasami which is the main reason we're getting more queer characters in kid media).

I'm not saying that TOH being gay isn't a factor or that LT's are good actually but rather that we have no real evidence that's the case with the former and the latter is not bad by default.

As for Sashannarcy, if it is going to happen my bet is that it will happen in the last episode to add extra emotional impact (assuming everyone comes out of this alive as this show is not afraid to show a beloved character getting stabbed and later possessed right AFTER said stabbing).

I really believe that people believing that Amphibia will end with a polyamorous relationship between three 13 year old girls are reading WAY too much into what's happening on the show. I have nothing against incorporating LGBTQ relationships into children's cartoons, but girls can be friends, even close friends, without it having to be romantic in nature, and I have not seen anything to suggest that Disney is ready to pull the trigger on this being anything more then three kids who liked to hang out together.

Trigger Warning: Cannibalism, Suicide and Rape

I hate to be cliche but I have to ask, if any one of the girls were a guy would people be questioning if this was romantic. Let's take a look at Sasha's dialogue in Turning Point

"Why? So we can come up with another cruddy plan that fails and ends up hurting the people we love?"

"I wanna be someone better. Someone that deserves you."

Could this relationship be completely platonic between the girls? Yes. But keep in mind that many, myself included, assumed that Korrasami would never become canon because it's not something would happen. In a show where the main character was tortured to near death, had someone's head LITERALLY blown off, death by electrocution, murder suicides and borderline Rape allegories.

Amphibia has had cannibals, the lead character intentionally killing said cannibals, attempted suicide and a beloved character getting stabbed in the back ONSCREEN!!! And they didn't make this quick they lingered on that shot for a solid 30 seconds and was so intense that Disney included a warning for that at the start of the episode. Oh, and the most resent episode has Marcy getting basically possessed in a scene that is VERY violent.

I'm just saying in a post Legend of Korra world, western animation directed at kids has become a LOT more bold and while it's possible that Disney isn't ready for the first Polyamory Romance it's just as likely that they are ready and after all the things I just mentioned three teenage girls having romance feelings for one another might not even register on anyone's radar.

I mean, it's a relationship between kids who are barely teenagers. I'm skeptical 13 year olds have the kind of emotional development to have something that requires that level of multi-person communication and mutual understanding. It's a big step up from "middle school sweethearts" stuff like Owl House.

They aren't 13 year olds. They're 13 year olds written by adults.
