I was encouraged by my Dad but not so much my Mom. When I was suspended for ten days, I wasn't punished. I had to chores and keep up with what my brother picked up (he sucked at that).

This isn't a boys will be boys thing either. Girls should do the same as well. Though in my experience girls go for disfigurement while boys go for blunt force trauma.
