Well, even assuming a really narrow definition of franchise, it would still count because a lone movie cannot be the worst movie of a franchise.

I'd argue that "Battlefield Earth" is very much the worst movie of it's franchise.

2001 is not an adaptation. Clark & Kubrick wrote the novel together, based on an early draft of the film script, while making the movie.

I wonder if The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen would count. Personally, I like the movie but I do know it was Connery's last film so you could say 'he did not go on to anything of note.'

Hm. Good question. I guess I'd have to say yes and no. The movie would be the only member of the film franchise, so it wouldn't be much of a film franchise. But it would be a member of a larger franchise, and I suppose then it would be the "worst" film.
