Brave: Does Anyone Actually Remember This?

Post by Winter »

While the debate as to whether The Legend of Korra is as impactful and as well known as The Last Airbender goes on let's take a look at another story that's part of a major franchise with Disney's Brave and ask, does anyone remember this film. Released on June 2012 Brave is part of a Disney Princess Series, a rather odd series as it's often hard to tell what films are and aren't part of said series (for a while The Hunchback of Notre Dame was part of the series before it suddenly wasn't because of the film's mixed reception which is odd given what we're about to discuss) and is, to date, the only Pixar film in said series.

Disney and Pixar made a BIG deal about the film, with the marketing going all out hyping the film up with a lot of trailers and giving it an air of mystery, almost nothing was known about the film before it was released. It was also, sorta, marketed as the next Mulan via by making Merida out to be more of a action girl instead of a standard Disney Princess and, again, hyping her up as much as possible with one clip having her pull a Robin Hood and shooting an arrow in half.

So, big marketing campaign and making this out to be one of the Biggest Movies of 2012 and the reception for the film at the time was... okay? I mean, I don't know anyone who hated the film, I also don't know many who loved it, the film was just seen as good... And while the film has been marketed by virtue of being part of one of Disney's biggest franchises the film itself is not really talked about all that much.

Not to say the film is bad or anything but it just kinda did a lot of the same as other Disney Princess films and very little of the things that were new (Merida not ending up with anyone romantically and the greater emphasis on her relationship with her mother over her father or possible love interest) didn't really get that much attention within the film. It will soon be a decade since Brave was released and it's not a film that seems to get a whole lot of attention and to this day is still seen as just kinda average.

So, does anyone really remember this film? To go back over to Korra and the debate as to whether it is as well known as it's predecessor there are still talks about the show and another comic being released as part of the 10th Year Anniversary while Brave, which is just as old as Korra, doesn't real seem to have anything planned for it's 10th Year Anniversary. I mean, Disney is giving a Sequel to Hocus Pocus with much of the original cast returning and the Sanderson sisters got to star in Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party as the main villains.

Hell, Andor from Rogue One is getting his own Disney+ series and this is a character that, as far as I know, NO ONE was asking for a series for (does anyone even know whom I'm talking about?) and despite his mixed reception with fans Rian Johnson is still working to get his Star Wars films made (I wish him luck and that is not sarcasm I generally don't wish ill on anyone). There's even rumors that Raya and the Last Dragon is not only going to get a sequel but a full on TV series despite the film only doing decently at the box office and getting mixed reviews from critics and fans.

But Brave? The only thing Brave related I've seen in the last 10 years is Merida appearing in Once Upon A Time and having a cameo in Ralph Breaks the Internet. So, seriously does anyone remember this film?

This is one of those "I hear it referenced but only by my brother's kids" things. I think we're going to be seeing a wave of nostalgia for it in about ten years. Same as Mulan sank without a trace until suddenly a couple of years ago it was everywhere.

It probably won't be as dramatic though, just because they had Moana and Star and She-Ra and Steven Universe and Owl House and Kipo and etc to move on to when they wanted badass heroines.

Yes. Not least because some friends of mine tried to show it to their toddler and the demon bear gave her a phobia. (Or maybe manifested a latent phobia, it's hard to say.)

As a question this seems really overstated. Of course people do.

One thing to keep in mind is that there is more and more media to consume all the time, and the rate is increasing. Not everything is always being talked about all the time by everyone. This is even more the case if you're narrowing your criteria to marketing material. It has no bearing on whether a film is enjoyed, recalled fondly, or even talked about, outside of your social circle.

That is a fair point and I've even said something similar over on the Korra discussion I just don't seem to see much of in general. I just noticed that the film's 10th anniversary was coming up and I was surprised Disney doesn't seem to be making a bigger deal about it. Doesn't really mean anything I was just asking a question.
