This is why I chuckled at the thread proposing that Beauty and the Beast was some secret trans story. It's quintessentially heterosexual from the standpoint of female fantasy with a monstrous, wounded man healed and made into a balanced, normal male by a woman's love.

If I recall correctly it was a theory proposed by a lesbian, so that adds up. Hell I'm bi and I'm still half convinced the entire "I can fix him" trope is some kind of joke.

It's not just that, but that the man is in a position of vulnerability and can't help but be exposed.

It's in such a situation that the guy can symbolically "open up" and show his real self, not just be an independent tough guy.

Oh, everyone knows but the women who read them. My mom was in hospital recovering from surgery once and a relative dropped one off to read. My mom skimmed through it and recoiled calling it porn, to which the relative became indignant and said it was just a simple little romance novel and stormed out.

I said it that was to provide contrast to how much larger the industry is.

If it's a joke then what do you call all the women who fall into terrible and abusive relationships precisely because they try to fix a man?

There's more dimensions to it than just saving someone too. There can be a power game of trying to elevate someone where the fixing it replaced with pity.

When I was on my second deployment, I read the first book. Mind you, my time in the Navy involved me reading alot of books. So at the time I ran out of books to read and a friend gave me the book to read. I mean, if I didn't read the book then I would have been forced to watch Starship Troopers, Top Gun, Rules of Engagement for 309th time since it seems those three movies were on almost every day.

Anyway, as people already have said, Bella was written to be the vessel for reader. I don't know home many times Bella said Edward was perfect and how many times she described him. But you have no idea what Bella looked like.

I read it even though the book was really not meant for me.

The movie I watched because at the time, I was with one of my girlfriends and if I get to sit through the movie I get to play with her untouchables.

I was dating a gal who was really into the Twilight Saga when the movies came out. I'm very grateful that we broke up before I had to see the first movie.

Everyone actually remembers Twilight. Either you were a fan, or you hated it. Either way you invested emotional energy.

Well I mean it's not the most indictable. Full Metal Jacket granted is pretty disparaging.
