Rowan Emmerich says MCU is killing Cinema

Post by BridgeConsoleMasher »

The very man who helped Solid Snake take down Shadow Moses says the MCU and Star Wars are killing cinema. And he doesn't have kind words for DC either (so it's not a case of a fandom rivalry).

A lot of the old guard directors have been saying that for a while. Scorsesse is still mad he had to go to Netflix to get The Irishman made, citing Marvel's success as the reason no other distributor would touch it. Kept comparing Superhero films to amusement park rides.

None of them, of course, blame Lucas and/or Speilburg for starting the ball rolling with works like Star Wars or Indiana Jones. Must be the children who are wrong.

There's a different between those and this churned out tripe. This is little different than the predominance of comic books now in libraries that have increasing shrinking catalogues of actual literature.

Spielberg and Lucas had something to their works. Even the Prequels did and weren't just filled with Awesome Button Abrams crap.

The only irony here is Roland of all people is complaining. His material of all things isn't any better than the stuff he's complaining about, and is often worse. The man's work is brain dead even when it has a chance to be something more (Stargate was decent in spite of him and could have been so much more; SG-1 just showed that he underperforms with good material).

It sounds like his complaint is that the big names are so omnipresent they push everything else out more than any comment on the actual content. Which if you're trying to promote your own big-budget special-effects-fest spectacle movie outside of and directly competing with the established franchises, which he is, seems like a reasonable concern.

You know you keep harping on this but a quick look at my city's library's website has comic books and graphic novels outnumbered by other books ~300,000 to ~30,000.

I think I've mentioned it twice lately, maybe this was the third (so far; I'm in a grumpy mood battling the virus here and the major symptom that's hit me is how it can alter your mood).

Outside of my old downtown library I've heard of complaints from others I know that it's fairly common in the Lower Mainland now here in BC. I do know that it's become quite difficult to get books from many genres now here where I live because the regional library system did such a huge purge of books.

This does sounds more like someone being elite and just not accepting things change. I mean most of his films are just as disposable as most super heroes movies.

He's looking at the symptom and ignoring the cause, media consolidation is killing cinema.

That's rich coming from a man who made schlock for almost his entire career.

I agree, that's probably the biggest next-level-down culprit. The combination of studio mergers, IP ownership deals, and vertical integration has destroyed the industry all up and down the chain.
