Western Coverage of Japanese Media on YouTube is in Severe Danger...

An anime reviewer I follow just got hit with a major bombshell. Basically, any Japanese IP holder can nuke a channel by filling a small SLAPP suit in Japan, a country where free use defenses just don't fly. This gets around ContentID and is super hard to defend against, if you're outside of Japan and/or don't speak Japanese.

Suede (the reviewer) has been recapping Pokemon episode by episode and the studio just claimed half his videos. Either he pays the fine and loses his channel, Bankrupts himself fighting a near certain loss on Japanese soul, or ignores it, looses the channel, and never sets foot on Japanese soil. He's already written off his channel and set up a new one. Chuck's covered anime, so he's a potential target for this move. Linkara's at risk, too, he's covered tokusatsu shows.

Please, spread the word on this. This needs eyes on it. If you're a westerner who enjoys Japanese media, this is bad.

Does anyone know if Chuck is aware of the issue himself? As it could impinge on... ANY of the anime reviews he's done. I was actually just coming to the forum to see if anyone else had started a thread here to bring it up. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't dream of it, but maybe someone (a mod, maybe) could just check/flag to make sure he's aware, since the danger is that the way this works it would take the entire channel(s) out, not just the anime stuff, so I think it very important that he's at least aware of this and so at least forewarned. (At the same time, of course, we don't want to spam him with it if he DOES already know.)



Sadly, it has occurred to me that, in this day and age, there is even a grim danger that as everyone is (rightly) warned about it, the wrong eyes may see it and go "oh, what a great idea!"



Depressing proof that corporations being excrements is a fully global phenomina. We really are in the dystopian corporate controlled future, aren't we?

I don't think anybody is happy, except for the... gentleman... who worked out how to do it in Japan... and The ShareholdersTM, no doubt.

But at least Chuck is aware of the possible danger (and it means that at least we can say he does know in case anybody else asks; ta for letting us know he knows!)



Really, i guess at this point all we can do now is see what pans out in the next few weeks.
