That might be the case because what does Ukraine have that would be of any use or value to Russia? Ukraine is not a 3rd world country but it's not exactly stinking rich either. It's value, aside from just more territory which always has its uses, seems mostly symbolic.

I wonder if this Putin trying to restore Russia's international prestige, to show the world that Russia is still a force to be reckoned with.

From somewhere else I read recently:
Ukraine accounts for about 25% *global* grain exports – forget oil! The territory gives Russia sea access and ability to strike all around. Ukraine supplies over 90% of US semiconductor-grade neon gas. It arrived there through Cold War, because USSR wanted to have space lasers.

Ukraine is the world's largest producer of vegetable oil and grain- bread prices in Europe are set to rise because a lot of that bread is Ukrainian. It is known as the bread basket of Europe because of this and for its other resources. There is a reason that Holodmor happened there- Stalin took most of the food from Ukraine to feed the rest of the USSR because that's where a great deal of the food came from in the first place.

It is the 10th largest producer of steel in the world and has 10% of the world's iron reserves. It has the 5th largest reserves of mercury in the world and the 2nd largest of graphite. It also has the largest titanium reserves in Europe.

It also, of course, has a lot of gas and oil reserves too, as well as Europe's largest reserves of uranium.

I hope you get the picture. Ukraine is absolutely packed with natural resources.

Geographically, it is also a hostile region on the southern border (even if that hostility is due to its past relationship with Russia) and furthermore it has a large border on the Black Sea. It is an extremely valuable country to Putin and to Russia in general.

Reports coming in of russian troops refusing to move into Ukraine. This is entirely not testified (n.t.)

Meanwhile, the hacker collective known as Anonymous hacks the web-resources of the russian Ministry of Defence and reveals a list with names of officials, including their adresses and telephone-numbers. Apparently a break-in even resulted in a list with names of some the soldiers that were sent to Ukraine. And in a genius master-strike, Anonymous also hacked russian TV broadcasters and made them broadcast Ukrainian TV feeds.

phantom000 wrote: Sat Feb 26, 2022 11:36 pmWelcome to the age of social media. If a company can track what you do with your phone, imagine what its like trying to hide a tank column as it moves through hostile territory. At this point neither Russia, NATO or the Ukrainian forces can do anything without the whole world knowing about it.

When the Russians crossed the border into Ukraine it would not surprise me if CNN actually knew about it before the Ukrainians did. I don't know for certain, but it would not surprise me.
You'll notice a conspicuous absence of russian frontline footage, compared to previous campaigns. The Russians have learned a bit from their previous campaigns and confiscated the mobile phones of their soldiers prior to moving into action. This also has the added effect of their soldiers being almost completely oblivious to the realities they are facing.
On the other end, you've got the information warfare of Ukraine, which is exemplary. People avoid revealing crucial information and yet provide footage and coverage with remarkable discipline and efficiency. Zelensky's use of social media to rally his nation and support is also of note.

Kyiv has been completely encircled but the defenders are still fighting.

Allegedly, Trump has been supporting Putin but I haven't been able to find a direct quote online. Does anyone have more info on that?
