Well, whenever you think Russia can't fall further down the rabbit hole, it makes a huge leap forward, if that is true. That'd be the first military use of any atomic bomb since Hiroshima and Nagasaki and it would break a huge taboo that would almost instantly fall back onto Russia. Not that it would be the only thing Putin shoot into Russia's foot these days...

They've lost contact with the automatic safe guards at the Chernobyl plant.

They said the chances of a disaster on the scale of the 1986 meltdown are very unlikely, but in an active war zone it's hard to be certain about anything.

In 2017 when they built the new containment building it didn't occur to them that people might be dropping bombs on it, just like in 1977 no one thought they would switch off all the fail-safes.Accidents at modern-day power plants are also much less likely to cause global-scale devastation of the likes of Chernobyl. Failsafes have been installed and cores today are contained by structures designed to withstand impacts and earthquakes.
Still, these containment structures are also not specifically designed to withstand bombs or artillery strikes.

I just highlighted from "Putin" to "use" and searched Google.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Wed Mar 09, 2022 5:37 amI may regret asking this, but could you link a source?CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Wed Mar 09, 2022 3:27 am A supposed whistlerblower has said Putin has considered doing a limited nuclear use to intimidate Ukraine into compliance.

The author also addressed the likelihood of Putin launching a nuclear strike against the West, saying it was a possibility.
They also wrote that Russia's foreign intelligence service, the SVR, was trying to find evidence that Ukraine had built nuclear weapons to justify a pre-emptive strike.
'Is there a possibility of a local nuclear strike? Yes. Not for military purposes (it will not give anything - this is a defense breakthrough weapon), but with the aim of intimidating others,' they wrote.
'At the same time, the soil is being prepared to turn everything to Ukraine - Naryshkin and his SVR are now digging the earth to prove that they secretly created nuclear weapons there.'

Also Putin went and bombed a children's hospital, so there's that. https://www.aljazeera.com/gallery/2022/ ... s-mariupol
I keep remembering that Putin is the man the Republican party spent so much time cosying up to and praising. Then again I suppose we as a nation have done our share of children's hospital bombings too, so it makes a depressing kind of sense.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills sometimes that people completely did not understand or care about the fact that Putin and his country did massive amounts of graft as well as election tampering in 2016. The FSB laundered massive amounts of money through the National Rifle Association in order to influence GOP candidates--buying politicians for their interests.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Thu Mar 10, 2022 3:51 am Also Putin went and bombed a children's hospital, so there's that. https://www.aljazeera.com/gallery/2022/ ... s-mariupol

People went to jail over this. They were guilty as sin.
And people act like Putin was just an ordinary guy doing an ordinary thing.

Yeah there is no defending this. This isn't 1944 when getting a bomb within 100 yards of the target was considered 'a direct hit.' In an age when even the Taliban have access to guided weapons you can't tell me the great Russian Federation doesn't have precision bombing capability.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Thu Mar 10, 2022 3:51 am Also Putin went and bombed a children's hospital, so there's that. https://www.aljazeera.com/gallery/2022/ ... s-mariupol
At best one could argue it was done by mistake but then you should court martial who ever is responsible for incompetence if nothing else.
