Re: The Ukrainian Crisis of 2022
That would be a good idea. I don't know if it's something that's possible, but then a lot of things I thought weren't possible have happened.

Re: The Ukrainian Crisis of 2022
It's built into the bylaws of the UN, so technically the answer is 'no'.
On the other hand, if everyone just decides to ignore the rule... it's not as though anyone can enforce it, or that anyone could prevent the nations of the world from deciding that the rule is changed.
In the US, it's theoretically possible to hold a Constitutional Convention, and change any of the basic rules the country is governed by. But in the UN, anyone on the five-member Security Council can veto any action the UN takes, and obviously Russia isn't going to permit itself to be voted off. But the rules of an organization exist only in the minds of the participants.

Problem with that is that I can't really see the UN even sort of working if that happened (not that it can because Russia would obviously veto it). When the UN was founded it had the USSR with Stalin on the Security Council after all - it's not about who deserves a place but who it has to tolerate to have a chance of being able to do anything. So unfortunately Russia has to stay.Frustration wrote: ↑Fri Apr 08, 2022 2:40 pm The UN is voting to remove Russia from its human rights council. (The mind boggles at the idea that it was on it in the first place.) But I say that isn't enough.
Russia needs to be taken off the Security Council for this ridiculous war.
I'd also worry that Russia might go even more nuts if removed.

Even if Russia's ability to veto was suspended somehow China would veto it.

1. Well the UN removed them. So, huh.
2. The Ukrainians have 7000 unclaimed Russian soldiers bodies in refrigeration as proof positive of the actual casualties of the war. They are presently claiming that about 18K Russians have been killed total and that the war has done more to the Russian military in a month than the entirety of the Afghanistan War.
3. Putin has also put his number 2 man, Sergey Besada in maximum security prison for his Ukraine intelligence failures.

How would you feel if you got kicked off the security council? You'd probably wanna start a war too.
