Well it's probably not quite as bad as the time (over a century ago) that the Russian navy ran in to the Hull trawler fleet in the North Sea and thought that they were under attack by Japanese torpedo boats. Nearly ended up at war with the UK as well as Japan when they opened fire and killed some fishermen.

It is shaping up to be a nice piece of historic poetry though since this ill-advised invasion has every potential of setting the stage for revolution in the same way the Russo-Japanese war did.
(God knows what the WW1 parallel spark would be though.)

Today Ukraine. Tomorrow, OPEC. That is of course after his failed annexation of the Egyptian Pyramids.

I'm shocked by my church leaders in Moscow
As well as having failed to unequivocally condemn the killing of innocent people in Ukraine, or call for a ceasefire, the Patriarch has held large televised services in Moscow to bless Russian troops. He has also suggested in sermons that the Kremlin's war is a righteous one about the future of Christianity.

"What is happening today is much more important than politics," he said last month. "We are talking about human salvation, about where humanity will end up and on which side of God the Saviour."

I'm not overly religious I admit but I thought most gods would frown on wars.

The idea Vladimir Putin, a former Soviet agent, is a champion of Christianity is even less believable than Trump.

It's awful the patriarch is betraying his faith like this.

He could have just yelled "Deus vult", it would have got the same meaning across.

It's hardly surprising given that the Orthodox Church has schismed over the war already.

The sheer level of cowardice the Orthodox Church has displayed toward Putin has been very disappointing. They've rolled over for him.

Mind you, the same for evangelicals and Trump.

That's painting the church as a victim of the system Putin, rather than realizing that the church is an integral part of it. The rise of religion in the wake of the Soviet collapse wasn't lost on the KGB-cadres like Putin. It's an unholy alliance for both party's benefits.
