From what I can tell from various websites, the bulk of Playboy's revenue now comes from merchandise. 65% of its revenue in 2019 was licensing. Basically, Playboy is now a clothing brand more than anything.

Sure. But they would have killed the magazine before the pandemic if it was losing money really badly.

Something can make a profit but still be shut down because the market for it has become too small to bother with. Playboy's sales numbers had been dropping steadily for a long time, and very likely the number of new/young purchasers had been decreasing even faster.

Perhaps it's time to lose the rights, then. I would have been perfectly happy if they'd never been seen after "Dalek" - that was a fitting end to their story.

I do not know British copyright law. But would that also mean they could no longer show past episodes with Daleks. And no longer sell copies of previous Doctors with the Daleks?

Perhaps. I put it to you though that you can count the amount of memorable Dalek stories on one hand (if you count the multiple episode stories as one story). I also put it to you that they all star William Hartnell, Tom Baker, Chris Eccelston, David Tennent and Matt Smith.
