14th Doctor Announced

Post by TGLS »

Apparently it's some guy named Ncuti (pronounced Shootee) Gatwa. Thoughts?

He was in a Netflix show about sex.

Not sure how he'll do until I see him, and equally unsure why they're replacing Whittaker, but he's a decent actor from what little I saw of him.

The BBC has doubled down - the only surprise I have is that its not a black woman in a rainbow coloured headscarf. Can't let the fans have what they want! A traditional Dr Who in the vein of Tom Baker or Matt Smith! Then we'd have, like, viewers and stuff.

Oh well. Another Dr Who I don't intend to watch. I already have no hope for Russ Davies bringing back the glory days.

An actor hold the position of Doctor for three to four years and then moves on. That's the typical thing.

Looking at his IMDb, he's a relatively new actor with less than a decade's experience. BBC seems to like him as he's MC'ed some events.

Dr Who is at its lowest viewing figures of all time and they choose a nobody with no experience to front the show. My diversity hire views aside, this is a terrible decision.

Well, he's certainly not a nobody to UK viewers, already having a BAFTA nomination as well as a BAFTA Scotland Award under his belt and his breakthrough series Sex Education, has been running for 3 seasons, getting massive viewership (there are reports that the third season was watched by 55 million people within the first month) and has been nominated for many awards.

As for being a "nobody", that's what people complained about Matt Smith when he was announced as the new Doctor.

Anybody complaining about the news of Ncuti Gatwa being the new incarnation of Doctor Who clearly didn't pay attention to the established canon. The classic series acknowledged that Time Lords can change ethnicities as shown in the final Pertwee story, Planet of the Spiders with K'anpo Rimpoche. K'anpo Rimpoche, who was one of the Doctor's mentors regenerated from a Caucasian to an Asian. Now, it was a man in yellow face, which is unfortunate but officially, K'anpo changed ethnicities.

An incarnation of the ancient Time Lord Rassilon was portrayed by actor Don Warrington (a black actor) in a number of episodes during Big Finish's Eighth Doctor series starring Paul McGann and his image was shown in the covers of the releases.

An interesting mention, while Romana was trying out different bodies until settling on the Lalla Ward incarnation, one of her tryout forms had blue skin.

What’s extra funny is, there’s already been a biracial Doctor whose father was Black.

Dude.

One, the character is an alien that regularly changes bodies, not a human.

Two, do you REMEMBER the Smith era??? When Smith was playing an eldritch abomination but being written as a space prettyboy by the hack showrunner?

Judging by clips I've seen, he has acting range. His experience range from Shakespeare to comedies. Most importantly younger viewers seem to know of him and like his acting. The show lives and dies on being popular with a new generation, some of the old school forget that.
