Re: 14th Doctor Announced
I'm sorry I don't buy that. We're not talking about a character from thirty years ago played by someone who's dead. This is Rose Tyler. One of the most popular characters in the franchise history. This would be like bringing back a character called Sarah Jane.
Re: 14th Doctor Announced
That's not what you were complaining about earlier, your original post was about how Rose Tyler was now being played by a black transwoman, which there's no real proof that will be the case.clearspira wrote: ↑Wed May 18, 2022 6:26 amYep, exactly. Writing 101. Don't confuse your audience. Its why there aren't two Harry's in Harry Potter despite it being one of the most common British names.Frustration wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 6:29 pm There's an awful lot of English flower names they could have used as an alternative. Yes, in the real world people just share names sometimes, but this isn't reality - this is FICTION!
Its also why you don't call a singular person ''they'' but I digress.

Black transwoman has been recast as Rose Tyler.
...
Still want to argue with me that the BBC isn't doubling down after the failure of Thirteen?
Re: 14th Doctor Announced
There's a possibility this new Rose might be Donna and her husband Shaun's daughter (yes Shaun was black). Could be Donna subconsciously naming her the daughter after Rose Tyler who helped her out in Turn Left before her memory was wiped.

Re: 14th Doctor Announced
Yes: Doctor, Doctor, Doctor, Doctor, and... Doctor.
I'm well aware that the phrase "English rose" has a significance in the UK that outsiders might not recognize. It's part of why Rose was named that. Re-using the name in an attempt to stress both not only the UKness, but the femininity, of this young woman is simply a bad idea.
I assume she's actually living as a woman, and not just gender-bending, right?

There's another thing. How accurate is that magazine/website? Bad Wolf Productions/BBC haven't even finished filming the special yet so for all, we know it could be a completely different Rose.

This is what the actual article said
I'm still saying this a different character named Rose, possibly Donna and Shaun's daughter who happened to be named after the same woman Donna encountered in the events of Turn Left and Journey's End before her memories were erased.Yasmin Finney is joining the cast of “Doctor Who” as a character named Rose, BBC announced Monday. Her role will debut in 2023, coinciding with the show’s 60th anniversary.
“Life on ‘Doctor Who’ gets brighter and wilder, how can there be another Rose?” said “Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies in a statement. “You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the ‘Doctor Who’ set. We all fell in love with her in ‘Heartstopper,’ one of those shows which changes the world — and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”
Finney has quickly became a fan-favorite on the hit Netflix series “Heartstopper,” in which she plays the character of Elle Argent. Her casting announcement follows the reveal of the next Doctor Who — who will be played by another beloved Netflix actor, “Sex Education” star Ncuti Gatwa.
“If anyone would have told 8-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them,” Finney said. “This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life. I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get ready.”
The series has been broadcast on BBC since 1963, and it has seen more than a dozen Doctors climb its ranks. Gatwa will be the 14th person to step into the role, while who exactly Finney’s Rose character is remains uncertain. Billie Piper originated the role of companion Rose Tyler alongside the ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston, in 2005. Finney could be playing a new version of that same character, or someone completely new. Also passing the torch to Gatwa is Jodie Whittaker, who has played the Doctor since 2017.
The casting of Finney, who is transgender, follows the history-making turn by Bethany Black, who was the first openly transgender actor to be cast on “Doctor Who” when she debuted her role as 474 in 2015. Rebecca Root became the first transgender actor to play a Doctor Who companion when she took on the role of Tania Bell in the audio series “Stranded.”
The news also follows the announcement that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return to the series for its 60th anniversary, reprising their roles as the Doctor and his companion Donna Noble. The two starred in the series from 2005 to 2010.

Like I said, those memories were less 'erased' and more 'locked away' and not very well. She may have pulled the name from the bits of the Doctor's mind still in her own.BBally81 wrote: ↑Wed May 18, 2022 8:09 pm This is what the actual article said

Re: 14th Doctor Announced
Heck it could be a totally different friend Donna had named Rose that the new character is named after for all we know.

Re: 14th Doctor Announced
Why would we assume that, in-universe, the character is named after Rose Tyler?
