The latest plan for settling Mars is to launch a massive 3D printer. I'm not joking. The idea is that they will ''print'' the buildings and furniture before we even get there. Robots will then assemble it all.
Sounds rather sci-fi but its not far off what we can already do.

Tell me when they come up with a manned mission that turns a profit.

Yes, it is far off. The sheer money and effort needed to get one little robot to mars, and you think we can put whole factories together? That's more ludicrous than doing it with human labor.

I meant in terms of tech. We could build and launch a 3D printer with robots. But yes, practically, it is not near.

I disagree that its more ludicrous than using humans though. Humans need sleep, food, water, heat, entertainment, sex, money. A robot needs a battery.

It also needs extensive programming to offset for speed of light delays

On the Moon? Nope. On Mars, that's another story, if we want any kind of detailed or complex action. But going to Mars without establishing a foundation for exploration and colonization is just a publicity stunt - like going to the Moon was.

I have read some ideas for Moon colonization is exploring potential 'cave systems'. As in ancient tunnels created by volcano activity billions of years ago.

That's an idea. Though to create a colony for humans in such a cave system would involve heavy equipment. Machines capable of grinding rock is never light.
I got nothing to say here.
