Wet nurses were used not just for the rich.

Think about it... Think about how dangerous giving birth was to women let alone to babies.

Rich didn't do it because they just didn't want to do it. Everyone else had to do it because of necessity.

When the poor used wet nurses, it was often because the mother died, and they generally weren't paid. The rich got to pay people to be wet nurses because they could afford it and they didn't want to nurse.
