Not to mention that other shows not named Star Trek has this as well. Pilots not being that good in comparison to the rest of the series. Characters are different from they become for example. And this is not limited to science fiction.
Big Bang Theory's first four episodes feels far different from the rest of the show due to Sheldon being less Sheldon for example. Married with Children's first season is far different than even season 2 was. Hell even AL Bundy sounds different. Kelly is a normal girl, Peggy isn't a waste of space etc.

The theory actually gets stronger when you look at her mother Captain Carol Freeman. When you start lining thing sup it becomes pretty clear that she was a young ensign or Lieutenant on the Enterprise-D, who served under Riker (which she may not view as the greatest experience). And was good friends with Sonya Gomez.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Sat May 07, 2022 10:33 pm
I wish they had reconfirmed that because it would also make her friendship with Riker and interest in all things Klingon make more sense. They may be holding that button because its a rather awkward retcon but, ironically, makes a lot more sense than, "Burnham is Spock's sister."
There's a difference also between, "Unknown Family" and "was part of the 1000 or so crew members of the ship."
