I held some years back that he would probably have to do something really undercutting to First Order, but he mainly just turns into a rogue like his father.
There's a very good argument that fans also saw in Kylo Ren something that wasn't there.

JJ Abrams: *makes a character to be the next Vader*

Fans: Oh, awesome! He's a wannabe Vader who is pathetic and weak! That is a great idea.

JJ Abrams: *winces*

It's pretty much any 90's kid that took Darth Vader seriously. Darth Vader wouldn't throw a tantrum in the control room really; though it's not beyond Anakin really.

Yeah, pretty much in keeping with the general skill level of this overrated hack. Besides, I would say Rian Johnson did more to make this character a weenie than JJ did.

I mean JJ had him throwing tantrums like an angry toddler, I can't imagine we ever supposed to see him as not pathetic.

Was he really though?

I mean, he was bested by literally every Force User in the Trilogy and had trouble dealing with non-Force Users like the Red Guard and Finn. I've made a joke elsewhere about Catra fighting Kylo Ren in a Death Battle but truth be told, between the Grandson of Darth Vader and the Angry Lesbian Cat Teenager my money would be on the character who's name is a pun because she's actually gone up against opponents who were stronger then her and Won which included an enemy that was designed to kill She-Ra!!! Kylo had trouble with a couple of Red Shirts and the Janitor.

Kylo Ren is masterfully portrayed by his actor but poorly portrayed by his writers.

He's not a very interesting character, doesn't make a lot of sense, and was poorly served by the scripts in which he was present.

He’s more royalty than anything. Snoke wanted him because Palpatine wanted him because he is Rey’s opposite. I only slightly feel that that’s slightly more relevant than him being trained by Luke, and unfortunately more than being Leila’s son, even if only because Luke’s still the only one that knows of her force sensitivity.

You might even say he is betrayed by his writers.

… I’ll see myself out.

Murdered, and betrayed, by his writers.

From a certain point of view.
