I always read the book before the adaptation when I can. That way the version I picture in my head is my own.
Plus I read World of Ice and Fire a while ago, I know the broad strokes.
Oh, then go ahead. It's basically a really expanded version of The World of Ice and Fire as well as the original Princess and Queen/The Rogue Prince stories.

That and it reads like a history book. But if you read the books, they did touch on the Dance of the Dragons period. So you will know somewhat how it began and end. Just not everything in the middle. The TV show I don't even think touched on it at all.

I honestly think Season 8 is the worse final season of any series. It reminds me of the reaction of How I Met Your Mother. All that build up for the final satisfaction only to be so let down that the whole series feels like a waste. Like the rewatch value plummeted down to the ground, dug deep and planted the flag of being unwatchable.
Whereas other series with terrible final seasons like That 70's Show, Roseanne, Scrubs, and so forth that if you took out the final season, the rest was still watchable. Assuming you like them.
At least with this series, it doesn't have to deal with the aftermath of Season 8. It starts new and there is a clear path to follow. They probably won't follow it 100% of course. But is there. There is a beginning and an end.
Honestly, people are already wondering if Snow is going to be set Beyond the Wall and somehow it being a lot more interesting than implied or if it's going to somehow become a defacto Season 8. Which would depend greatly on how many actors they could get to come back for it.
The only thing that would be interesting in Beyond the Wall is that Snow Ice Castle we saw in the show when the baby was transformed. With death of the Night King would the snow melt and maybe we would see some ancient evidence of 8000 years ago? Or would it start off in the North and then have Jon go off to the other lands?
I just don't see anything really interesting to make a series. Maybe make the post-Season 8 conclusion more chaotic?

Well there's a bunch of Wildling stuff that was thrown to pieces by the show that could be revived like the Val/Jon romance, the Karstark plotline, the actual "Civilized" Willdings, Cannibal Isle, and so on. You could get a couple of seasons by fixing the shit they tore apart.
But if they can get the people back, you should totally have Queen Sansa, Brienne, and so on.
And pay Emilia Clarke however much money she wants and give her a firstborn child to play resurrected Daenerys.

What Val/Jon romance?
The Karstark plot line couldnt work with a Queen Sansa in power. Unless there is a bit of a Rebellion from the Karstarks. Which in itself might work since Sansa is a woman and not a man.
Anything involving the Wildlings who were still past the wall would have to explain why the Night King didn't pursue them. I can see small pockets like a dozen or less but nothing big enough to make a series.
We did get a sense in the show the North was evacuating due to the Night King army.
We just got to accept that Game of Thrones and the characters are done. We won't see them again until 40 years from now when they redo the series that is closer to the books.

Be as I am a Westeros.org junkie, it's kind of hilarious that I've read 300 pages of Winds of Winter. George reads them at cons and readings so I wonder why he can't just bring the ball home or if it's him trolling us now.
