A politician should vote their conscience because that's the point of being a representative you elected.

That's the part that gets me. I do agree with that. If this senator is doing it because of conscience but at the same time supporting his son, it is still at odds.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 2:53 am A politician should vote their conscience because that's the point of being a representative you elected.
He attended his son's wedding to support his son whether or not he agrees with it. Is that just duty as a father or his conscience as a father? We could assume him being anti-same marriage to keep his job or it is really his conscience?
In the end, all we know is that the man ultimately voted against his son's marriage.
I got nothing to say here.

Gratitude for clarification here.McAvoy wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 1:05 amNah I am just talking about the conservatives who commented in the Fox News site.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 1:01 amI'm not really a Republican so I can't speak to any hypocrisy among his base. And really his son's wedding isn't really hard to understand him going to above policy.McAvoy wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 12:43 amYep. I read the comments in the Fox News report of it. They don't see it as hypocritical but someone who sticks to his beliefs and also supporting his son even if he doesn't approve.
The way I look at it. That's bullshit. Basically if this senator had his way he would basically make his son's marriage illegal, thereby not supporting his son.
Just taking it at face value that's all. We can assume he doesn't really care about same sex marriages but votes against it just to keep his job.
..What mirror universe?

A “You’re One of the Good Ones” exemption. Most conservatives who have marginalized friends are like this, and tend to think their overtly bigoted cohorts are merely exaggerating for effect/clout/votes and donations when they describe what should be done.Nealithi wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 10:13 pm Okay so I was auto sent a tweet on this topic. I occasionally read the comment section of Fox News on various reports. Just to get an idea of the general consensus of the thinking of the right. I don't respond because I find it pointless as 99.99% of them will never change their mind and would just create too much stress on me for nothing. Hell not even to troll.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 4:09 amGratitude for clarification here.McAvoy wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 1:05 amNah I am just talking about the conservatives who commented in the Fox News site.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 1:01 amI'm not really a Republican so I can't speak to any hypocrisy among his base. You'll mostly just get the concensus of the vocal minority from that. Argueably, there're even a lot more bots talking there than any of us realize, as well. Unfortunately it doesn't help, of course, that various groups get their understanding of the "consensus" informed by these tilted forums.
It's the modern-day equivalent of Goebbels' Sports Palace Speech, where upon the question whether the german nation wants the total war, a pre-selected audience gives standing ovations and in unison screams: "YES!!!!". It's a display to shape public perception.

I do get that. A vocal minority will be heard the most than the non vocal majority.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Sat Jul 30, 2022 4:36 am You'll mostly just get the concensus of the vocal minority from that. I actually pay more attention to the comments where multiple people respond and respond back. Kinda shows more that there is a person typing it, but also not just a post and go type of person.

A lot of rhetorical development happens on social media while not really graduating to full discourse. Comment sections and their top filter system tend to populate with a ever still colloquial takes on issues in spite of that development.McAvoy wrote: ↑Sat Jul 30, 2022 3:29 amI occasionally read the comment section of Fox News on various reports. You know I am fully capable of figuring out in comment sections of what's is just post and run, generic comments, and all that.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Sat Jul 30, 2022 3:45 pmA lot of rhetorical development happens on social media while not really graduating to full discourse. I also have many conservative friends on Facebook with varying degrees of Trumpism. I also follow a couple of veteran humor sites, that over the years got heavy into conservative politics.
I can say that the comments being said in the Fox News comment section is not far removed from what my conservative friends and those veteran sites say.

Maybe if this one passes the senate we'll get a bill to enshrine abortion in law.
