Discussing the Development of the Feral Predator aka Boneface

Post by Winter »

Okay not quite development but certainly a bit of insight to the Predators skills and character because outside the Predators from Alien vs. Predator this is the most fleshed out Predator we've gotten in the films. One thing I love about this movie is how each hunt the Predator has up until the final battle uses visual storytelling to impart information and give us a look inside the mind of the monster.

The first kill the Predator has in the film is the rattle snake which shows the Predator's reflexes, that it's able to stab a snake mid strike. The fight with the coyote shows that the Predator will fight an opponent on their own terms as it only uses its wrist blades to fight it. The fight with the bear shows us just how strong the Predator is which highlights that it can't be beaten in a straight up fight while its first fight with the Comanche warriors shows its skills as a fighter.

The fight with the French Trappers is, of course, to show off how technologically advance it is compared to the humans with the most up to date technology. And finally its fight with Taabe shows that it can and will cheat if it feels a fight isn't going it's way. Also, unlike most of the other Predators we've seen (with the exception of Celtic and Wolf in the AVP films) this Predator fights almost exclusively in close range combat.

What I love about this is that this helps to give the Predator more depth as while it is a hunter looking for the strongest prey we how its interests change as the film goes on as it goes from hunting animals that can fight back to hunting humans exclusively after the fight with the Comanche.

Probably one of the best scenes in the film is the fight with the French Trappers and what I enjoy about that fight is how, after a little while, the Predator almost seems bored. Like it was impressed at first when they managed to trap it but it quickly became apparent that no one here was a real match for it either as a fighter and that their tech was WAY below it's own. Notice that during that fight the Predator hardly uses any of it's tech outside of the net and shield but rather fights the humans hand to hand. I get the sense that the only reason it used its attach drones was because it had gotten fed up with the trappers putting up such a pitiable fight that it just decided to use its best weapon to get this over with.

I know I'm in the minority but this is part of why I enjoyed the first AVP film and Wolf in AVPR because those films gave more depth to the Predators instead of just making them one note villains with no real character beyond "Hunt human, take trophies" that we got in Predators or the stupidly convoluted motives from The Predator.

It amused me on watching it the second time that Taabe pretty much won that first round. Like if he didn't have to deal with his sister and the Predator didn't cloak himself he could have won it.

Which is why the Predator cloaked. Predator knew it.
I got nothing to say here.
