Thing is, more men on the ground is not going to make all that much of a difference because Ukraine seems to have won the air war, American weapons are 50 years ahead of anything Russia has, and Ukraine has apparently liberated so much Russian gear that they are now one of the best equipped armies on the planet. Putin is hoping to do ''a WW2'' on a country that is readying itself for WW3.
There is a lot more to air-superiority than having more planes, that's something the Soviets learned the hard way back in the Winter War with Finland. The Red Air force nearly had the Finnish air force outnumbered 100-1 but that was not as big of an advantage as they hoped. The Finns did not have a lot of heavy industry so there were no major targets for the Soviets to bomb combined with poorly trained crews with little to no combat experience and the damage they inflicted was almost negligible.

During the Vietnam war the USAF had a sizable advantage, not like they had over Germany in WW2, but enough for the North Vietnam Air Force to face an uphill battle, which they effectively.

I'm just saying that air superiority might not be a game changer if Putin is clever about this, something he hasn't really been so far. If he pulled all his forces back into Crimea and dug in with heavy weapons he might be able to hold off the Ukrainians for a long time, maybe long enough to force a settlement of some kind.

On the topic of referendums in regards to the "People's Republics" joining Russia, the russian state released some numbers showing high 80%s to high 90%s of approval. Curiously one of the regions they mentioned...
Samuel Ramani
@SamRamani2
RIA Novosti published these polls of support for joining Russia

Donetsk: 94%
Luhansk: 93%
Zaporizhzia: 87%
Kherson: 80%
Source: https://twitter.com/SamRamani2/status/1 ... 3381359621

Except... Saporischja... It's a very good indicator for how gawddamnfucking rigged these numbers are. "Why?", you ask? Simple. About 50% of the population of that region lived in the capital city of the Oblast, before the war started. Said capital city, Saporischja, Russia has failed to conquer and occupy it ever since the war started and it remains in Ukrainian hands. That's how democracy worked in the Soviet Union. That is how democracy works in modern day Russia still.

And on the note of Putin announcing partial mobilization today. Plane ticket prices from Moscow to other international airports in countries for which russian people don't need a visa immediatly, like Dubai or Istanbul, skyrocketed to prices north of $5,000 over night. Russian airlanes are also prohibited from selling tickets to russians within the age-span mentioned in the mobilization decree. Oh and there were protests in (at least) Moscow today. More than 700 people were put into jail already.

The pressure on the internal cooking pot is rising.

Oh and the currently most often requested Google-queues from Russia?

"How do I leave Russia"
"How to get to Armenia"
"Refuse conscription"
"How to break an arm"

Particularly the first question was representing 100% of all Google Searches from Russia at times today. Variations thereof are also quite popular.

It all really looks like it's falling apart for Putin (as if that hasn't been obvious for some time). I am rather worried about what he might do out of frustration and anger and there are no choices left to him... people in that situation often make very irrational decisions. With any luck he'll fall out of a window first.

We might be seeing another Russian revolution shortly- and possibly, with it, another Russian Civil War.

If this war does turn nuclear I think my country would regret conscripting me. I kind of picture myself as a cross between Blackadder in the trenches and Arnold Rimmer. Oh, and I have Velma from Scooby Doo level eyesight. I might just beat Harry Kim for the world's least promoted soldier.

On a more serious note, I plan to be underneath the bomb when it goes off. I enjoy my 21st century life of conveniences and plenty too much.

Harry Kim is still an officer...

Well, unless you go with the apparent, "everyone's an officer but Miles O'Brien."
