Doctor Who confirmed for Disney+ in 2023

Explanation: Disney has exclusive rights to new episodes of Who outside of Britan and Ireland starting with the next special in 2023. BBC still has it in the UK while Ireland... just seems to be out of luck...?

HBO still has Modern Who up to "Power of the Doctor" for the foreseeable (presumably Disney gets those when that deal runs out), while Britbox still has Classic Who.

From what I can gather, it justs means it will be streaming there, Disney will have no say over the content of the show, maybe effect the advertisements but let's be honest DW haven't been doing the best there lately.

I'd say it's a decent move. Disney seems willing to actually market the show (This tweet alone is more attention than HBO ever gave DW, now imagine a big card on the front page of D+ and a couple of those YouTube ads), and, since D+ has a larger install base and ISN'T currently selling every organ it can spare to pay off its loan shark, that'll mean more eyes on the show, which'll mean better figures, which will mean the show has a better chance of not getting canned again. Plus the cash infusion won't hurt.

Now, if you aren't a fan of Disney, you WILL be waiting for the home video release. No one will be broadcasting it on traditional TV from here on. Australian fans are sad that ABC (funnily enough) lost the rights after 58 years, but American fans are largely ecstatic that BBC America won't be butchering the show for ad rolls, anymore. I'm WAS in the latter category before cutting the cord, for the record.

I'm hopeful, but I can understand some folks' apprehensions. At least D+ is half the price of HBO and more likely to still be here for DW's Diamond Anniversary. I bet a hundred bucks that THAT'S why they brought back the '70s era logo, by the way.

Probably more significant is that along with this announcement comes the revelation that before the new Doctor takes over, David Tennent will return as the 14th doctor (with the next Doctor being the 15th). Catherine Tate will also be reprising her role as Donna Noble.

This is interesting entirely apart from reading into it, but to me it seems hard not to interpret this as an attempt to generate interest from those fans who for various reasons lost interest during the 13th Doctor's tenure (or even during the 12th's for that matter).

I agree she has a very strong fan base, but I always thought that Martha Jones was the companion who did the least of all the modern ones. She does wind up doing a lot in that finale where in the future she and Mickey have become these kind of elite forces in part of a paramilitary group, but it always felt out of place to me (for her, not Mickey) because in all the episodes up to that she always struck me as so incompetent. Mickey was always kindof dumb, but he was nevertheless always ready to act and had some legitimate skills (he was very good with computers if I recall) so it was easy to imagine that he developed better decision making and rounded out as a person over time, whereas Martha always seemed so pointless. I never understood what the writers were going for with her. When Donna shows up with that key or whatever in her first appearance as a full time companion I remember the first time watching it being profoundly struck by how she had done something helpful and it really drove home that I hadn't felt like that had happened in the entire 3rd series.

Admittedly it's been over a decade at this point, but that's the opposite of what I remember about Martha. I really liked her, especially comparing to Rose, specifically because she was so much more capable and clear-headed. Most of the time when she's in a crisis situation, instead of freaking out and panicking like I was expecting after two years of Rose, she'd just immediately pull out a manual and start work on figuring things out. If a bad guy was posing as a friend to get information, she'd always pick up on it right away and not give away the game. There were at least two episodes in which the Doctor became incapacitated and Martha had to save the damn universe all on her own, and she did it. Admittedly after she left, she did tend to get stuck in the "damsel in distress" role when she made cameos in Donna's season, due to the writers wanting to give Donna the spotlight.

Anyway, the thing that was annoying about Martha was that RTD couldn't resist making her have a crush on the Doctor. And also that the Doctor kept treating her like crap. What was up with that anyway?
