Can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with you wholeheartedly.
I would definitely apply to jobs like fast food ones. There is no reason to have someone do a 14 hour shift unless they picked up an extra one.

But there are other reasons why you may work a 14 hour shift and it isn't a bad thing. Or the employer being cheap on hiring a second person etc.

Take for example, a lack of qualified people in the industry. Just not enough people with the license to do the job.
I got nothing to say here.

It doesn't even work out for the employer in the long run because it generates huge amounts of churn.

Like Amazon projects they won't have enough people to staff thier warehouses within 2 years.

I wouldn't want this schedule but it's a lot better than, for example, 8 hour rotating. Or the chaotic "see when you're on the schedule" nonsense the article makes it sound like they had before.

14 hour work day? No thanks, longer weekends aren't worth three days with no time to yourself. And from the business perspective you'll get crap quality work if you push people on to it.

Personally if they are willing to do that work and aren't force why not. Again it should be their choice.

I think he is assuming no one really loves their job.

I do. Something new and interesting everyday for me.

I would love to work 14 hour days. In my line of work, that opens up for the possibility of extra overtime days. Whole days of nothing but overtime pay.

Fast food workers rarely have much choice about the shifts they work.

Being pushed to do it? Yeah definitely. If you give them a choice? Maybe not. Depends on the job.

Fast food? Not exactly the greatest job in the world to work even an eight hour day let alone 14.

Got to be careful about how you regard "willing" - that any choice is a real one and doesn't only exist in theory ("well you can choose between this and being sacked" merely being the most extreme example).

Correct. People tend to fail to realize, how their actions and choices reflect on their larger peer-group. A prime example is the worker who is willing to put that extra effort in and does work in his unpaid off-hours, even if it's just ten minutes. Company sees things are in working order despite cutting hours, so they'll try to cut more hours, putting more performance pressure on everyone. Negative feedback loops are a thing.
