Puss in Boots: The Last Wish or The Animated Version of The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

Post by Winter »

I think it's safe to say that no one was expecting this movie to be so damn good. I mean, Puss in Boots 1 was just an average film that had an average story with average characters. Who wanted a sequel to this? And more importantly why was so much effort put into said sequel?

I mean it, this film is amazing and I wasn't that found of the Shrek series to begin with. Sure I enjoy the first two films but I just like those films, I don't love them and I kinda felt the same way about the rest of the series. So I was thoroughly surprised that this film was one I not only thought was enjoyable but may very well be one of the best films Dreamworks has ever made I mean it.

But one thing I found so interesting about it is that how similar it was to another great film, that one being The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. I know that's a weird comparison to make but when you get down to it the two have a lot in common. Both are about several characters (all of whom are outlaws and criminals) who seek a great treasure but while all are criminals two of the 3 are presented as overall good people while the third is unquestionably evil.

There are, of course, a number of differences (most notably there is no 4th villain who has a personal beef with one of the outlaws) but those similarities are so fascinating and I honestly wonder if this was intentional on the part of the filmmakers.

Thoughts?

Looking forward to it because I enjoy Cat Zorro but I'm waiting for streaming.

I personally think you should check out on the big screen because there are some scenes that watching this on a regular TV just won't do it justice... Unless you own a home theater in which case knock yourself out. :D

Saw it, was good. Between this and finally starting on Owl House I think I might need to learn more Spanish if I'm going to keep up with kid's media.

Honestly I don't think the comparison is really that close. There's no on again off again partnership through the movie between two parties like the outlaws in the western. The soundtrack for the final confrontation was definitely invoking The Good The Bad and The Ugly though, might even have been a direct sample.

It could be argued that the Bears looking to ally with Puss and Kitty with the later refusing to work with them and then trying to steal the map without them and the heroes working with Goldie at the end could be seen as the whole On Again Off Again alliance but I'll admit that is a bit of a stretch.

Like I said I just happen to notice the similarities in a few places more then anything. Glad you liked it.

I've not watched it but I did see Sachastic Chorus' review which impressed me with just how dang heavy they were apparently willing to go in a kid's film. Bit of an annoying Catch 22 really in that I'd have never have seen the film otherwise based on how the Shrek franchise has gone up to this point but I also really wish I could have seen the film unspoiled without knowing anything about it as the review does cover a seriously metal reveal.

Off topic but I would love a series just focusing on the bear family. Adore the dynamic of the four of them, it's so pure and wholesome in a rough and tumble way.

It did kinda feel like they were setting the characters up for a spin-off so it is possible. Personally I just have this image in my head of Goldie asking some poor girl out and introduces her to her family and the whole time her date is screaming internally because she realized that the girl she's with is the head of a crime family.
