Gonna place it here. It took a while and a few judicial battles, but a T-72, destroyed in Ukraine, made it's way in front of the russian embassy in Berlin. It'll remain there for this weekend, after which it will travel to the Netherlands, to be displayed there.

The Russians really do have some obsolete looking tanks. No wonder modern anti-armour is ripping through them.

China is trying to broker some kind of peace deal. Zelensky doesn't like their proposal but is willing to meet for a peace conference. I'm guessing like a good leader he is trying to keep his options open as long as he can.

What I’m afraid of is, you either die a hero or live long enough to actually see yourself become the enemy. What does this mean for zelensky?phantom000 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 12:47 am https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64762219

Re: The Russian Invasion of Ukraine
Not much probably. China's "peace" proposal will probably be little better than "surrender and give Russia almost everything it asks for," then try to blame everyone apart from Russia for being against peace when that gets rejected, doubtless accompanied by a load of BS claiming that it shows China is for peace and the rest of the world is not.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 11:04 amWhat I’m afraid of is, you either die a hero or live long enough to actually see yourself become the enemy. China, in the end, looks after Chinese interests, I'm too realistic to believe otherwise. But I would like to think that even China understands its own interests probably would not be served by picking fights with the EU or NATO.Riedquat wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 8:05 pmNot much probably. Maybe I am naive but I like to imagine China watching all this unfold and trying to decide "who do I dislike the least? Putin or the EU?"
Re: The Russian Invasion of Ukraine
Well China seems quite happy to do everything short of actually claiming support for Russia, so it looks like Putin's the answer. Oppressive regimes tend to only care about other oppressive regimes when they're directly fighting each other, yet less uncivilised parts of the world keep their behaviour uncomfortably in the spotlight, which upsets and annoys them. Their supposed "peace proposal" does indeed look like it's basically "Ukraine, surrender."phantom000 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 11:58 pmChina, in the end, looks after Chinese interests, I'm too realistic to believe otherwise. The West and Russia both draining their resources on this, dragging it on for years and distracting them from Chinese behaviour sounds like a plausible goal, especially if it means they can invade Taiwan. China will be quite happy to make Russia utterly dependent on it, and whilst its economy relies on selling stuff to the West it's certainly no friend at all (probably the only thing stopping overt Russian support).

Re: The Russian Invasion of Ukraine
It’s worth remembering in assessing China’s motive that being a peace maker is, in itself, a valuable and influential reputation to have. While they certainly have military and economic interests in any outcome of this war, building a reputation as a neutral party who can mediate peace talks between distant belligerents also serves their interests and increases their standing with other nations they have a more direct material interest with. They would quite like to be the primary backer of many resource-rich African nations that previously have been stuck with their colonizers in Europe and the US for support

Also they tend to have enough domestic issues and have a hard enough time being both the biggest and one of the most locked down societies. Their moves always seem to be delicate and discreet on the international stage.
