I thought the Intrepid-class was a frigate or patrol-type ship. The reason it was sent to search the badlands was because it was small and maneuverable enough to navigate the plasma storms. That's why it being stuck so far from home was an issue.

The Intrepid suffers from Voyager bad writing tbh. Because thing is, that SHOULD be the Intrepid mo: small crew, minimal conveniences, heavily armed. It sounds like a support ship. You bring this in to patrol or escort etc.

And then, they give it the fastest warp drive in the Quadrant. Not just fast, but Formula 1 car fast. Faster than you would ever need fast. And prototype biological circuitry?

Hand weapons got a lot more powerful since DS9, it took mass volleys to kill a liquid form changeling in DS9 but they go down in one solid hit now.

I think the official stance is the VOYAGER was meant to be the first of the new science and exploration ships and the chasing down some Marquis as a shakedown.

Basically to make a long story short *this is spoilers since SFdebris hasn't covered those eps yet* is Ezri was still a counselor in training but Sisko pulled strings to have her reassigned to DS9 as a full counselor.

Agreed, it's not a good showing from Starfleet for mental health. Ezri wasn't just inexperienced but down right hazardous psychologically to be around where she was frequently out performed by a singing hologram. It's a shame that they dropped the plotline about her Orion Syndicate mother pulling strings as at least that would explain how she got to be in a position so far, far, far over her head and with a symbiote to boot. Voyager didn't have one at all fromwhat I remember, and that was designed to be a long range exploration vessel where you'd think there'd be more call for one. Best they could do was Neelix and the Doctor when he tried to fiddle with his subroutines.
Actually, there is an episode that explains it but SFdebris hasn't covered those eps yet.

OK, I was referring to the part about the family conspiracy… That Voyager should have had (?).

Oh you misread me. My comment was not about Voyager not having a family conspiracy but that the ship didn't have a councellor on the crew. It was also about how the writers were originally going to reveal that Ezri's mum pulled some orion syndicate strings to get her the symbiote and her position but the writers thought that'd make starfleet come across as to corrupt. Instead they went with the Sisko explanation after she got the Dax by accident which personally didn't work as well for me.

I thought it was desperation. Dax needed to be put into a new host immediately and she was the closest non-combined Trill.

If so, maybe this was Shaw's attempt at a coping mechanism, putting Seven as his first officer. And a way to get back by having her use her old human name more.
Picard and Janeway helped get Seven into Starfleet. I think it is implied, will have to watch episode one again, that she got the post on the Titan thanks to them as well.

Hence my 'admirals be damned' comment.
It's OK to make mistakes as long as you don't make the same ones. If you do then you're not learning.
