If we're gonna expand to that I'd add the "Descent" two parter, which is partially a sequel to "Suspicions" and shows Beverly's command skills.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 8:06 pmI'd add "High Ground", "Cause and Effect", "All Good Things" and "Attached" to that list. Crusher tends to be more a catalysator, a facilitating character, rather than taking center-stage to drive the plot in most episodes, but there are a number of episodes where Crusher's presence is anything but beige.CMWaters wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 7:09 pm"Remember Me" and "Suspicions"?clearspira wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 7:00 pm Crusher's problem is the opposite. She's beige. She's just there. She's not memorable enough to have
a trope named after her. Y'know... at least Troi had the episode where she was turned into a Romulan. I can't even think of a good episode that stars Crusher. Dr Pulaski, for all of her faults, had more long term potential than Crusher ever did - they just spectacularly botched her execution.

I've always respected her interactions with Lwaxana Troi. She was often written poorly, though, given nothing to work with beyond stating the obvious.clearspira wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 7:00 pm Problem is, I, and many others, disagree with this statement. What we got from Troi and Crusher wasn't often ''pretty good'' at all. The trope ''A Day In The Limelight'' on TVTropes even used to be called ''The Good Troi Episode'' due to just how god-damn rare it was to get a good performance out of her.

For me though I just really disliked it, as even compared to early s1, it comes off hard as Rick & Morty in a way that even Final Space didn't do as badly as, and that show had a piss fight. The voyeur Gumato jacking it, the tasting of shit, the random character introduced to be brutally killed for lols, it just didn't at all work in the slightest.
(Incidentally Final Space does get a lot better but there's still no excuse for that one episode and a couple of their more grosser excursions into poor taste)

Probably not as gross as some stuff Shax had to do under the Cardassian occupation though. I'm sure there was a female counterpart to Dukat somewhere that a younger Shax was forced to service before he joined the resistance, for example.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 2:06 amThat's fair. This sort of thing runs the risk of making the Bajoran occupation and the Cardassians in general comic book evil though. One of the reasons why DS9 is a classic is because it actually understand concepts such as ''not everything merely comes down to good vs evil.''CMWaters wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 3:01 amProbably not as gross as some stuff Shax had to do under the Cardassian occupation though. Re: Your Most Hated TNG
That's a problem the new shows have especially struggled with, and Lower Decks in particular because it's a comedy first and a Star Trek show second. Lower Decks has at least worked to improve its distance from that particular risk more recently.
I can't really think of a TNG episode I have that's The Most Hated (lots of good candidates have already been mentioned), but the Troi discussion does bring up The Loss as a great example of almost getting it with her character, and the sort of way that she sees herself versus the rest of the crew, her unique abilities, and her royalty-adjacent upbringing; it conveys a certain amount of privilege and superiority that never really gets explored well before or after. In fact it's really only tangential in many ways (or so I recall) but it feels like it informs a lot about her character, at least when it's being written as more than a plot device. As much as she protests against her mother when Lwaxana is present, it gives me a sense that Lwaxana has a better sense of who she is than her daughter, as Troi is often written as blind to her own faults. So I don't hate this one, but it's definitely a big missed opportunity that was a really close call to being something much better.

We had a whole episode about Cardassians doing exactly that. It was a bad episode, but it's still canon, not "comic book evil".clearspira wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 3:03 pmThis sort of thing runs the risk of making the Bajoran occupation and the Cardassians in general comic book evil though. Yeah cardassians are cartoonishly evil. They are the romulans with a cultural narrative attached.

Re: Your Most Hated TNG
That's something that has always been kind of weird with the Cardassians and the Bajorans. The whole tone of the show suddenly goes from things like "wacky adventures with the space time phenomenon of the week" or "what are the comedy goblin merchants up to this time?" to "let's talk bluntly about the sexual exploitation inherent to slavery and how it relates to the ethics of justified terrorism" when they're in focus.
...for space is wide, and good friends are too few.
