I mean, it's very common in real life. However, there's usually the caveat of, "One of the persons is related to the other." Platonic male-female friendships are very common. The raising a child together and living together part is the slightly strange bit.
You don't see someone without a previous relationship just taking up residence in their life.
Which is why in my headcanon, Holga is Elgin's half-sister or cousin.
Kami is right. One of my hobbies on Youtube is watching dating fail videos and I can tell you with 100% assurance that single mothers have it ROUGH when it comes to dating. Men simply do not want to know. Mostly because it costs an average of $17,000 a year to raise a kid.
And you're telling me that in addition to spending all of his money raising her kid (because statistically, its almost never the other way around) he's not getting any sex from it? Sorry, but that just doesn't bode with what i've seen.

It's his kid and they aren't each other's type.
Elgin actually says right at the beginning that they fell into an "honorary siblings" relationship almost as soon as they met. I have a couple friendships like that. Never raised more than a cat together, though.
In my "this is a real game table" headcanon the players actually are siblings.
...for space is wide, and good friends are too few.

It’s more common than you might think, but rarely seen between two single adults of compatible genders.
Siblings who share living arrangements will of course look after kids even if only one had them, for instance.
Or neighbors who separately have kids will tag one another in for parenting duties.
Or of course gay and lesbian couples working out coparenting arrangements.
That sorta thing, what “It takes a village” originally meant.
It’s worth remembering that, to Holga’s
mind, she was still married and hoped to reconcile with her husband. So by the time it was clear to her that would never happen she’s long since developed a relationship with Edgin that precluded a romantic pairing.

In real life, I know a few of these things with roommates. But it's usually the same sex.
I've seen it personally. Usually those platonic friendships with a kid is short termed. Usually due to one of them going through something and just needing a place to get back on their feet.
In one case, thw mother with kid couldnt afford the house or afford to move out. Just stuck. Friend of the circle moves in and helps out. She ended up saving enough money to move and live on her own with her kid and the guy whlent his own way too.
