"Event" films with big spectacles are usually the only ones where there's enough of a quality difference to justify the extra expense of seeing it in a theater.
This is me.

I don't go to the movies for dramas or comedies anymore. Unless I am on a date.

I have a good enough setup at home to watch dramas and comedies. You don't require a gigantic screen, you can get an audience through family or friends, and no need for surround sound for the most part.

But Endgame? Nah I have to watch that in the theaters. But now, I have gotten lazy about going to the theaters to see movies.

My last two? The Batman and the new D&D movie.
I got nothing to say here.

If a movie has a really bad rating then I'm definitely buying a ticket.

I used to say that myself. The so called professional movie critics didn't like the movie? Well I want to go see it if it really does suck or the critics are just being dumb.

I think that's more of a case of a) finding a critic who has similar tastes to you or b) one you know well enough that if they hate a film you can read between the lines to know you'll enjoy it.

Yes I'm aware that's easier said than done. I just really dislike aggregator sites and refuse to pay attention to them. Such things are just anithetical to the concept of what reviews should be.

If Disney can make serious money on utterly incoherent Star Wars movies, they're not going to bite the bullet and reform. They'll just keep releasing garbage.

That argument holds for all creators.

Funny you say that as I do think that Solo seriously spooked them. It looked like before that they were eyeing two Star Wars films a year, but now they're trying to work out what to do with the films to not cock up so badly again. Meanwhile they're pumping out the tvshows as that's proved to be less potentially flammable.

Then I'd guess that either they lost money with Solo, or they underperformed so much that they were afraid their projects would be cancelled in favor of alternatives with a greater return on investment. (Opportunity costs are a way to 'lose' money, after all.)

The Star Trek expanded universe novels contained some real gems, but most of them were garbage that were released because they were Star Trek and fans would buy them regardless of their quality.

Solo also changed directors so late in production that they basically ended up shooting it twice, and the budget ballooned to match.

Don't get me wrong I thought it was a lousy movie, I'm just saying there's more than one reason it lost money.

Hoo boy yes. I still can't get over the existence of Dark Passions especially which was a not very good smutfic that might have been okay online, well maybe, as mentioned it wasn't very good even compared to some of the fanfics I was reading at the time, but less so when it was published as two actual novels that they expected people to buy with money.

For those unaware it's focused on mirror universe Seven of Nine who is part of the Obsidian Order so she can still still keep the name, be out of touch of humanity, etc, but it's mainly just an excuse for her to have various dark passion-y scenes mostly involving the Intendent. They even go to Risa.

Of course, eventually Seven ends up with Janeway and co anyway.

It had none of the emotional depth, character accuracy, or the humour of that one memorable fic where Seven and Torres got trapped in a turbo lift :D
