So we're now at the point of twitter blue subscriptions and checkmarks (the old verification checks are gone) having so much negative social credit attached that Elon is giving people blue status against their will as a form of harassment. And/or as a joke, I don't think he actually knows those are different.

On the other hand I'm genuinely impressed they kept the site up this long after firing everyone who understands how the software works.

Which kind of proves that he was right to fire them given how they're gone and everything is working just as well as it was before. What were they actually doing?

I think anyone over a million followers is just getting them for free. No idea why, but that seems to be the pattern.

I picked up on that story a few weeks ago already, but was waiting to find more than one source for it and then forgot about it. Today, CNN picked up on it. Musk switched off Starlink during crucial military operation in Ukraine

Elon Musk secretly ordered his engineers to turn off his company’s Starlink satellite communications network near the Crimean coast last year to disrupt a Ukrainian sneak attack on the Russian naval fleet, according to an excerpt adapted from Walter Isaacson’s new biography of the eccentric billionaire titled “Elon Musk.”

As Ukrainian submarine drones strapped with explosives approached the Russian fleet, they “lost connectivity and washed ashore harmlessly,” Isaacson writes.

Musk’s decision, which left Ukrainian officials begging him to turn the satellites back on, was driven by an acute fear that Russia would respond to a Ukrainian attack on Crimea with nuclear weapons, a fear driven home by Musk’s conversations with senior Russian officials, according to Isaacson, whose new book is set to be released by Simon & Schuster on September 12.

According to the article I originally read, this allegedly went so far, that the US' Departement of Defence entered the field and threatend to take Starlink away from Musk.
