Funny you say that as I do think that Solo seriously spooked them. It looked like before that they were eyeing two Star Wars films a year, but now they're trying to work out what to do with the films to not cock up so badly again. Meanwhile they're pumping out the tvshows as that's proved to be less potentially flammable.
And yet, somehow, they deem it a good thing, to pull Rey out of retirement. I mean, yeah, you can absolutely salvage the character, but why pull all that bad weight along with you...

If I were to guess, Kathleen Kennedy. Rey is her baby even if indirectly and she is still in charge of Star Wars.

I think of you get rid of her, we may end up getting Knights of the Old Republic.
I got nothing to say here.

Mario has hit a billion dollars FYI. This is just embarrassing for the MCU and DC at this point. I predict that only Guardians 3 and the Flash movie have any chance of breaking this - the latter solely for the return of Micheal Keaton as we saw with No Way Home the power of nostalgia.

I don't think anybody expects them to be billion dollar movies though.

It's understandable that the Mario and Sonic movies are utterly approachable for families. Marvel and DC movies though shying from sexual theme deal with death rather casually. To automatically align your expectations with those movies would be like getting mad at farmville for taking over game revenue numbers.

When I went to my nephew's birthday party at the theater to see Super Mario Bros, I did talk to the supervisor for that day. Mainly about when we had to leave the theater, clean up etc. I was hopeful there as an extra adult to help my brother and his wife contain the the kids. Anyway he said, since the movie came out, every weekend for every showing is like some kid's birthday party.

Just made me think about other movies like that. My brother and wife bought out that showing for that birthday party, just makes me wonder how many times and how many theaters through the world is doing the same. Maybe not buying out the showing but, perhaps pre-buying let's say 20 tickets.

Oh lastly, do not be an adult at a birthday party at a theater. For some reason in the absence of their parents these kids run amok during the movie. Of course I can only be rough with my brothers kids but not the others, but his kids were actually watching the movie as opposed to the other kids wanting to see the f they could break their neck jumping from one seat to another.
I got nothing to say here.

Just a general point, there's been a long history of films based on games, and most of them have been terrible. Anyone remember the 90s Super Mario Bros? IIRC Tomb Raider was quite successful financially (it got a sequel) but no-one called it great, even those who watched it - and note that that's not the same as not enjoying it. Sometimes people like a bit of rubbish, just like they like to eat a bit of crap food sometimes. At any rate it's fairly forgotten now.

If we're doing box office scorecards the last big Disney franchise movie was Avatar: the Way of Water at 2.3 billion.

To my recount I remember Resident Evil generally being the strongest video game franchise to be adapted to movies. I believe the formula for movies like Tomb Raider and RE was originally inspired by the first X-Men movie which used the late 90's gen-x action drama genre to do a printout so to speak of the medium. Not too unfaithful to the subject matter, but the movies are somewhat star-powered works looking back. Blade on the other hand was a bit more faithful to comic art direction.

Actually what I think the sonic/mario movies have done is successfully emulate what successful short novel adaptations do. Whenever you can create moments on screen that remind the viewer of the specific experience of reading & imagining or playing & imagining by reflecting it on screen, you get a rather meme-tastic experience. At least to the extent that sonic has to collect rings for instance and somehow fumbles and loses a bunch to a consistent extent. From what I remember, short novel adaptations will do that for up to several parts of whatever book I've read, though I think these game movies might be able to get the effect more consistently, in similar fashion to the persistent kinetic nature of Marvel movies.

It does seem like the MCU is running out of steam. Avengers: Endgame was awesome but it had a Star Trek 6 feeling to it, like this was intended to be the big send off for the original avengers. If that was their intention then it is not a bad way to wrap things up but it leaves the audience with a sense that it's all over. I think that is why the recent MCU films haven't done as well because they feel kinda anti-climatic at this point.
