No one is denying that Right-based economics are pretty heavily influenced by Rand and her philosophies. So is libertarian-ism as a whole. Amusingly, while Reaganomics is based on massive privatization and deregulation, Rand thought very little of him--in part because Rand considered his appeal to religion to be offensive to her "objective" view of the world.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2023 2:10 am She was also, along with Greenspan, friends with Milton Freedman, whom was the first economist I read. His approach to social intervention boiled down to negative taxes for everything while decentralizing most any public service there is, as there is a market value for most anything the private market can provide. Basically what Trump tried to do.

Objectivists generally hate each other almost as much as they hate nice people. It has to do with a worldview that can only allow a few John Galts amid a mass of parasites and sheeple.

In the wake of the Court's decision, the Biden administration devised a new plan based on existing regulatory authority. Under this forgiveness plan, borrowers who are still repaying their loans after 20 years, roughly 804,000 individuals, will see their outstanding debt forgiven completely. While this plan is expected to impact a much narrower portion of borrowers, it is also predicted that it will wipe out $39 billion in outstanding student debt.
Student debt forgiveness plans of all kinds have long received strong pushback from Republicans, and within the last week, Senate Republicans like Rick Scott of Florida and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee expressed outrage on social media over Biden's new plan. In response, the official White House Twitter account pushed back, noting how many of each senator's constituents will be impacted by the plan.
I appreciate the simple fact of pointing out how many individual citizens will benefit from this in each state.

Well that's something. It's sickening though to think that people have been saddled with student loans for decades.

I feel saddened to have to remind you that the administration that processes all those loans employs people. People who have families and life obligations. While debt forgiveness will help a lot of people with some extra pocket change, these kind of decisions often have ramifications.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2023 10:57 pm Well that's something. Seriously, I'm sorry but this is a lie. The loan administration people aren't being FIRED. The loan forgiveness, which would be $20,000 dollars with the original loan forgiveness plan PER PERSON (hardly pocket change), doesn't get rid of loans in general (that are still going to happen). It's loan DEBT.
And bluntly, it's disgusting and evil for the government program to charge INTEREST on supporting the education of its citizens.
Also counterproductive.
It's weird because libertarians should be all for this because this is a TAX.

Idunno, I could see them wishing to change the rules by congress in order to do it rather than by executive directive.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 7:17 pmThis is...just stupid.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 5:43 pmI feel saddened to have to remind you that the administration that processes all those loans employs people. But yeah I don’t imagine them having much of a dog in the fight anyway.

Well, she indulged in what's known as the 'Russian' style of novel writing, although both Dickens and Hugo wrote similarly at times, at least they had the excuse of writing serially in magazines in which they were paid by the word. Her prose is so extensive that important plot developments and necessary information are often lost in the overgrowth and pass unobserved by less careful or exhausted readers.
She lectured, and her lectures aren't even realistic - the infamous speech cannot possibly be spoken by human beings in the time it supposedly took place in, even if you got John Moschitta Jr. to do the audiobook.
She ditched her original plans to have 'realistic' characters and chose to make virtually all of them idealized: supermen no flaws (as she defined them) or twisted villains with no redeeming characteristics or partial virtues. There were two decent and normal people in Atlas Shrugged and both end up killing themselves.
Her plot ends up turning on a burst of intuition that cannot possibly be justified rationally while she praised rationality and condemned mysticism.
In essence, her written arguments are incoherent even when her conclusions are basically correct.

That's a bit of a "we should drop litter so we can pay people to pick it up" argument. If someone invented a magic potion that cured all diseases I'm afraid I wouldn't be saying "but what about the doctors and nurses?"BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 5:43 pmI feel saddened to have to remind you that the administration that processes all those loans employs people. America other types of loan just because they are not being parasitic and nickel and diming people for almost their entire lives for getting an education doesn't mean they are firing all those people.
