They're not making money on streaming because nobody is making money on streaming. All the streaming services are deep in the red.

I was already a rare cinema-goer before the pandemic, and it'll probably be a long time before I go again even if the pandemic eventually ends. Streaming is a far better experience in literally every way. I'm certainly not going out for a movie during a pandemic.

Largely because they keep idiotically dumping money into them. It's a bad long-term strategy. The entire market is out of balance. The studios were jealous of Netflix but went in with zero understanding and hoped that wads of cash and government-granted monopoly power would be enough to make it work. So far it's not working out for most of them, and the ones who can possibly weather it like Disney don't really understand why.

Seriously, all they need is their complete back catalogs, their new releases on a short delay, and MAYBE a few originals. Until cable is ACTUALLY dead (and it isn't, just look at stuff like Yellowstone), it's too early to fully pivot to streaming. And even THEN, the Big Five OTA networks will likely NEVER fully die. Radio hasn't, yet.

I'm not sure if it's much different than the EV market. I know it's pretty similar to the premium cable market.

Probably they'll keep pumping money into streaming until cinema is largely dead, then the streaming services will themselves collapse.

Exactly. And they don't yet realize how removing things from the catalog... EVER... sets a precedent you can't walk back from. Tax loophole or not, it fundamentally damages the value of your service.

The combined actors and writers strike has led to mass cancellations of film and TV - as it of course was going to. Some films/shows have been put back as far as 2025 and others have been cancelled completely. There are also rumours that studios are using this as an excuse to ''pick the wheat from the chaff'' allowing them to get out of unfavourable contracts or let go of people who weren't measuring up.

What i'm getting at here is that between Covid, and inflated ticket prices, and now the fact that the second half of 2023 to 2024 is going to be barren for high quality releases... streaming isn't going anywhere. It is potentially the only cost-effective model going due to their back catalogues. Its cinemas who are in massive trouble. Absolute perfect storm.

Glad to see that we at least get one more season of this show before they stop doing MCU content and take down Disney+.

Other than catching Guardians 3 when it hits streaming Loki is the only MCU product coming up I have any interest in.

I've consistently liked all the Star Wars shows, though. Really looking forward to the live action season of Rebels.

I agree, which is why their culling of the long tail is such a stupid move.
