Yes, some missing words there. Hate when that happens but it's an unfortunate flaw of living with teenagers distracting you.
Fixed.

I have. I'm aware it can have certain benefits, but it's a net negative.clearspira wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 5:40 pmAutism is a spectrum that is comprised of many different things - not all of them bad and sometimes it is even advantageous. Your view of autism is simplistic and offensive. Read up on it.
Human nature is just awful. Most humans aren't malicious, but they are entitled, selfish, lazy, emotional, irrational, careless and prone to tribalism. They would gladly live a life of hedonism if given the chance; most just can't afford it.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2023 2:51 amI'm neuroatypical but my opinion is that "regular" behavior is often dishonest, selfish, and deeply troubling.

Re: Strange New Worlds
Listen to autistic people when you decide if autism is a mental illness or not. They are the best qualified to know.
Humans are by their nature industrious. Look at minecraft for example. Humans will still do work even when their basic needs are met. To believe otherwise is to buy into propaganda that the rich use to decry the poor.
Also your attitudes to sex are...yikes.

Why throw in "emotional" in that list as if it's a bad thing? Without emotions there's nothing to be gained from life, it's mere existence otherwise. Nothing worse than some fool saying "things have to be considered on facts, not emotions and sentiment," as if there's any point in doing anything for any other reasons. Even the basic desire to survive is an emotion. Without it we'd have no incentive to eat, wouldn't do anything other than autonomous responses. Emotions are what gives things value, without them facts are meaningless.JL_Stinger wrote: ↑Sat Jul 29, 2023 3:02 am Human nature is just awful. The problem isn't emotions, it's giving in to the immediate emotions and desires without thinking them through, since they've evolved to mostly deal with short-term issues in a world where food and the energy it gives are hard to come by, hence the desire to stuff ourselves and be lazy. Because those are the immediate ones they do tend to prevail over some otherwise more long-term, more satisfying ones, such as the satisfaction from doing things with our own hands, and the personal benefits of being healthy from not stuffing our faces with junk food and being as lazy as possible (this is one of the reasons I deplore a lot of supposed "advances").

Your view on what JL said is in my opinion going to be formed entirely on just how much crap you've had to deal with from the rest of the human race in your life.Riedquat wrote: ↑Sun Jul 30, 2023 11:47 amWhy throw in "emotional" in that list as if it's a bad thing? Someone born in a gated community with a butler is going to have a very different view than someone growing up in the slums. Someone living in New York in 2023 is going to have a very different view to someone living in Berlin in 1941.
Me personally, I think he's absolutely right. And this is the exact reason why concepts such as God persist into our age of science and rationality. Karl Marx called it ''the opium of the masses''. That promise of paradise is the thing that allows us to tolerate shit. Shit from other people, shit from our bosses, shit from the government, shit from the corporations. Just put up with the fact that life is shit for 70 years like a good boy or girl and you'll be rewarded with eternal life and happiness. Pretty sweet deal, huh?
The people who can look below the sugar-coated topping and see humanity's true face? They begin to sympathise more and more with the Comedian from Watchmen or Joaquin Phoenix's Joker. All you can do is laugh at the absurdity of it all - or go mad.
But anyway, lol, as I said. Your view on this will depend entirely on your life up until this point. The nicer its been, the more you'll think i'm talking out of my ass.

Actually I'm just not sure how that's an actual response to any points in my post.

Re: Strange New Worlds
I think people who grew up in the lap of luxury are more likely to have a dim view of humanity, not less. They judge the world by their own low standards. People who live a life of struggle in the slums are more likely to see the tiny miracles their fellow humans perform because ignoring the suffering around them is unthinkable. To venerate the Joker or the Comedian is sophomoric.clearspira wrote: ↑Sun Jul 30, 2023 9:13 pmYour view on what JL said is in my opinion going to be formed entirely on just how much crap you've had to deal with from the rest of the human race in your life.Riedquat wrote: ↑Sun Jul 30, 2023 11:47 amWhy throw in "emotional" in that list as if it's a bad thing? I'm telling you that everyone has a different perspective based on their life. This shouldn't be a hard concept. Fuzzy clearly understood even if he disagreed with my conclusion.
Re: Strange New Worlds
That's just a statement of the obvious, and an irrelevant one at that (since it applies to every discussion under the sun).clearspira wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 8:22 amI'm telling you that everyone has a different perspective based on their life. Partially. There is fact and there is opinion. Opinions tend to be a poor substitute for fact.Riedquat wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 6:57 pmThat's just a statement of the obvious, and an irrelevant one at that (since it applies to every discussion under the sun).clearspira wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 8:22 amI'm telling you that everyone has a different perspective based on their life.
