Alabama Election
Alabama Election
So tomorrow is the election in Alabama. Who do you think will win? If Moore loses, is he too special a candidate for this to be bad news for Republicans? If Moore wins, is it bad news for Democrats, or is it inevitable with 20 years of Republican domination behind him?

Re: Alabama Election
If Moore loses, it's bad for the Republicans because they've lost a seat so safe that last time the democrats didn't even bother running anyone. If he wins it's bad for the Republicans because he's unreliable and they have to either be eject a senator endorsed by Trump or be brushed as supporting pedophiles.TGLS wrote:So tomorrow is the election in Alabama. Re: Alabama Election
Moore is almost certainly going to win - His opponent is so milk-toast, unmemorable and policy weak - a clear sign the democrats continue to learn nothing from repeated failures. Moore will likely win because the corporate democrats simply don't have the right policies and the messaging that comes out of them in order to compete.
It's an embarrassing train-wreck to constantly lose over and over again in the exact same way....
It's as I say if a Democratic Socialist like Lee Carter can win in VIRGINIA - something that that the Democrats have repeatedly called impossible in the most economically conservative states in the union. They can win just about anywhere it would at least be an actual race.
The Democratic party left him high and dry he was up against a fundraising juggernaut in Jackson Miller - NOBODY on K-street thought he could win and he pulled off a NINE POINT VICTORY it was not even CLOSE not even remotely. We made the republicans look like FOOLS and waving DSA flags in their faces and belching out 'Solidarity Forever' like we don't care whose watching.
I wish the democrats were like that I really do. Someone like Carter could bring together a coalition of populists to really give Moore a run for him money and it's really sad there isn't one.

I count it among the most despicable things I have ever done to another human being and I'm sorry.

Re: Alabama Election
Moore's almost certainly going to win because he's a republican, this is Alabama, and Moore's made a name for himself by being incredibly anti-gay. I'm happy for Lee Carter, but winning a district anchored by a majority democratic city in a blue state is not the same thing as being a viable candidate in the most conservative state in the country. Left wing populism would only play well in Alabama if it were old school Dixiecrat money for the whites and only whites.Rasp wrote:Moore is almost certainly going to win - His opponent is so milk-toast, unmemorable and policy weak - a clear sign the democrats continue to learn nothing from repeated failures. The people of Alabama were exactly the kinds of people LBJ was talking about when he said, "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." Going hard left won't work in Alabama because the republicans would rather they eat a rat and the democrats eat half a rat than both eat a steak dinner.

Your metaphor is confusing. What does the rat/steak represent and who does the dems and reps represent.Draco Dracul wrote:

If the rat/steak is politics then the metaphor falls apart as only one party can win the state. Is it wealth? Because the LBJ quote implies a wealth redistribution from whites to blacks meaning no steaks only 75% of a rat for both.
Are the parties the voters? If so, why would a rep still be a rep if they support the dems? Is it the leaders? If so, that sounds a lot like collusion.

Re: Alabama Election
The quote from LBJ is about how wealthy whites get away with stealing from poor whites by giving them someone to look down on. That they would willing let themselves be used and taken advantage of simply for the sake of having someone else hurt even more. Working together for a common good could allow both to have more than they have now, both because wealth isn't a zero sum game and because there is another group that has much more and benefits from those with little being played against each other.Antiboyscout wrote:Your metaphor is confusing. In this case the largely poor republican voters would rather vote for republican politicians that will continue to cut the social programs they depend on just as much as the democratic voters so long as they can have just a little bit better social standing than the democratic voters.
