Zero Punctuation is no more

Post by CharlesPhipps »

A huge chunk of the Escapist's staff have resigned in the wake of, well, something and that includes Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw.

Shame.

He gave us many years of fantastically fun reviews. But maybe it'll get him more into his novels.

Is this a ''Channel Awesome'' kind of something?

Anyway, it really depends on how much of the copyright he has on his own stuff as to whether you'll see him again.

Long and short: Editor-in-Chief of the site, Nick Calandra, got fired by the corporate owners of the site. Apparently, he wasn't meeting goals. Very vague and out of touch goals, according to him. The ENTIRE video content staff, including Croshaw, walked out right behind him in solidarity. The entire brand was flash incinerated in mere HOURS...

They've already regrouped and are working on a new outlet, appropriately called "Second Wind".

Funnily enough, one of the folks who walked was formerly of CA. I only knew him from Linkara's audio drama, sadly.

Though, honestly, the similarities are surface level. If the CA scandal had been Rob getting fired by the ACTUAL owner of the site/IP (I can't remember his name) and everyone, including Doug, had left, THEN it'd be comparable.

Well, bugger. I've been watching Zero Punctuation for well over a decade every week so this is going to be a genuine loss even if he does move onto do something similar.

Then it's a wonder it's been a thing for so long as the Escapist has imploded once already where Zero Punctuation was legitimately the only thing they had left after the fallout of that for years.

They'd actually been on the up recently. Yes monetizing swearing was a thing, and left them open to many an easy joke, but at least you could put that more on youtube. Some of the The Stuff of Legends series had been well worth a watch showing they could finally make quality non-Yahtzee based content again.

I saw an even worse comparision than that where someone genuinely tried to make a case that it was similar to Jeremy Clarkson's firing for punching a member of his staff, and that Yahtzee would be entering his 'Grand Tour' stage of his career. Legit pants on head, high on anti-Beeb fumes, madness.

That's interesting. Y'know... i've always kind of wondered why the ex-Channel Awesome guys never did that themselves. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts and they would have had the name recognition to try it. Let's be honest, its only really Angry Joe of the non-Walker clan members who has thrived since CA disbanded. Some of them do OK of course but they aren't over the one million sub mark like he is. It might be too late to try now, a lot of their names are probably lost on Zoomers after so long.

They were mates but not business partners, I guess.

From what I can tell, the treatment they got from CA burned a lot of them on having a formal network/group AND everyone was too busy steering their own ships to ALSO organize a whole fleet.

Lindsay Ellis got pretty big, over a million subs anyway. That was after abandoning the Nostalgia Chick schtick and a total retool of what she did, though. Wrote a few best selling novels too, which I have not read.

I think that after CA disater they didn't want to do something like that again, plus they might have felt they can do well by themselves.
