I'm not arguing here because I really know F all about American law, but DeSantis has already tried to change protest laws before. I'm not actually sure how legal or illegal this ban currently is. TL;DR, he's been trying this since George Floyd.

I know a little bit, not enough to be an expert but from what I understand free speech only applies when its on your property, or public property.clearspira wrote: ↑Sat Nov 18, 2023 5:05 pm I'm not arguing here because I really know F all about American law, but DeSantis has already tried to change protest laws before. Think of it this way.
Somebody standing on the side walk shouting 'help Palestine,' that would free speech. Now if that person comes into your home you would not be violating their first amendment rights if you told them 'shut up or get out!' because it's your house! This also applies to a place a business, if you ran a restaurant and someone came in and started shouting 'help Palestine,' you would be within your rights to throw them out, it's your place of business. Even if they went out into the parking lot, it would still be your property. If they stepped out onto the side walk, it's not your property anymore and now their rights to free speech take over.
Now something like a college campus is one of those fuzzy grey areas that lead to a lot of legal headaches. Is it public property or is it a place of business? If it is a business then who gets to decide what does and does not happen on campus?

Public property issues just have to do with interference of affairs of any nature. Blocking a walkway would be simplest example.. but protesting itself on public property or infrastructure isn’t legally problematic.

DeSantis is one of the most fragile human beings in history. Even if I agreed with anything the guy said, he freaks the hell out about anyone disagreeing with him. So much so that Disney condemning his don't say gay bill resulted in a three or four year feud.clearspira wrote: ↑Sat Nov 18, 2023 5:05 pm I'm not arguing here because I really know F all about American law, but DeSantis has already tried to change protest laws before. We just didn't have cellphones, live streaming, and 24/7 panopticons.

In the UK the stupid shit we did back in the early noughts was the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe. And the rise of alcopops that gave us one of the worst teen drinking rates in Europe too.
Not me though. I was a boring kid. My life was new epsiodes of Farscape, Buffy, and Voyager. The good times lol.

I was a theater kid, most embarrassing thing I did was improv comedy. Not well, mind you.
