Clearspira, saying "well ALL systems are flawed" is very trite and a a piss-poor defense of any particular system. And you are out here saying "Well sometimes FASCISM is GOOD".

This whole situation's fucked.
Re: Hamas Attacks Israel
Depends on the example. Most socialist states either formed via revolution or were too weak to ward of outside interference (such as from the CIA). Trouble is revolutions have a way of rewarding the most underhanded and ruthless organizers who then become singularly terrible leaders during rebuilding. Ultimately it's hard not to conclude that Leninism is just not a terribly good path to achieving post-capitalism even if the socialist states that it formed are things we can take lessons from.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 2:29 am Clearspira, saying "well ALL systems are flawed" is very trite and a a piss-poor defense of any particular system. I never said fascism is good. I never said that it was bad. I'm trying to detail the old adage of ''at least the trains ran on time.'' Fascism has an appeal - we saw that in 1930s Germany. Normal, hard working people who turned to Hitler en-masse. They weren't evil despite how privileged Zoomers on Twitter may have painted them. They were no different to you or me.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 2:29 am Clearspira, saying "well ALL systems are flawed" is very trite and a a piss-poor defense of any particular system. To say that an ideology is always, always always, always always always, bad, displays limited thinking typical of our 2023 black and white discourse. The world is far more layered than that.
And as for socialism's greatest flaw, nah, Maggie Thatcher nailed it best. It requires giving vast quantities of money to people for doing nothing. Which is great until you run out of other people's money and then you are screwed.

Re: Hamas Attacks Israel
Anyway, getting off this subject and back onto Israel, the sociological implications of this war fascinate me.
Note how we no longer talk about Ukraine? That's still going on. Putin is committing 10X the atrocities that Israel supposedly is. That war is literally on the borders of major EU countries. Everything that is currently bothering you about Israel, Putin has been doing for nearly two years.
And on that note, bad stuff is still going down in Syria. And Yemen. And Somalia... and 110 other places around the world according to the UN. But do we talk about that? No. Always Israel. Nothing but Israel.
And I just find that interesting. What is it about this conflict in particular that so boils the blood and gets people marching through the streets? My opinion is that ever-present hatred of Jews that the world has endured for the last thousand years combined with social media telling people who they should hate. But i'm sure there are other factors as well.

What, and again I ask this in the spirit of inquiry, the fuck.clearspira wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2023 7:50 amI never said fascism is good. I never said that it was bad. Fascism is bad. It is always bad. Because it's facism.
Normal, hard-working people can commit unspeakable evil. Now you're saying the people who just went along with the Nazi regime weren't that bad because they had good intentions? I am trying to parse what you're actually saying.
I really need to straighten this out before I can go any further, because your position on "Is facism bad?" really affects whether I consider anything you say to have any merit.

Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of EvilFuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2023 3:49 pm Normal, hard-working people can commit unspeakable evil. The book is a harrowing read and the phrase "normal people like you and me just doing their jobs" will hit very different after reading this.Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil is a 1963 book by political thinker Hannah Arendt. Arendt, a Jew who fled Germany during Adolf Hitler's rise to power, reported on the trial of Adolf Eichmann, one of the major organizers of the Holocaust, for The New Yorker. A revised and enlarged edition was published in 1964.
Arendt's subtitle famously introduced the phrase "the banality of evil". In part the phrase refers to Eichmann's deportment at the trial as the man displayed neither guilt for his actions nor hatred for those trying him, claiming he bore no responsibility because he was simply "doing his job". ("He did his 'duty'...; he not only obeyed 'orders', he also obeyed the 'law'.")[1]

How did Israel go from being attack to being the bad guys?
Re: Hamas Attacks Israel
They were always the greater evil. Hamas knows this and exploits it to cement their own power. They just miscalculated how far along Netanyahu was in his final solution.
