Squares screens: Useful or outdated.

Post by Thebestoftherest »

I rewatch Linkara Secret invasion review, and I picture got me thinking. Are alternatives shape screens useful, like hexagon, circles and triangles, or is squares the best shape?

Rectangles (which is what you mean by squares I guess) are by far the best. They are easiest to carry (one dimension to worry about), they fill the full field of view most efficiently, and generally fit into human spaces best.

Science Fiction is a genre where anything can happen. Just make sure what happens is enjoyable for yourself and your audience.

Like I told my nephew, 'don't knock convention UNTIL you find it wanting.'

A triangular or circular screen would probably be more difficult to design and build than a square/rectangular one, and then what would be the benefit?

It's the same reason 98% of the vehicles on the road have 4 wheels instead of 5 or 6 wheels. Because 90% of the time four wheels does the job just fine and there is no real benefit to have more than 4 wheels. Not to say that there aren't such vehicles but they are the other 2%, where 4 wheels just won't work.

Build-difficulty might have been a contributing thing in the past, when screens largely were cathode-ray radiation chambers making phosphor glow in different colours, but these days, you could easily create panels in any shape you'd like for minimal extra cost, I think. Probably the most obvious reason for screens being rectangular is, to me, that this is how we see the world naturally. Our field of view is about 130° in the vertical and 220° in the horizontal. That's almost a 2:1 aspect ratio and most things around us happen on a planar level, meaning we're naturally inclined to pay more attention to the horizontal view over the vertical, overemphasizing the width as opposed to the height in our perception.

Making the screen rectangular and, particularly, wide just kinda comes naturally. Just like we produce t-shirts and pants with two openings for appendages. We could add more or include less, but that's just not natural to us.
