To my understanding, the President of Iran isn't actually in charge, and he doesn't control overall policy, but he's a fairly high-ranking official under the Supreme Leader, so this is significant on the order of losing a cabinet secretary. He apparently does the budget, for instance.
Also, this particular President was apparently the expected successor to the Supreme Leader, so this could have a bigger impact than his position would suggest.
