How you create the next Disney Princess?

Post by phantom000 »

If you had the chance to create a character to add to the Disney Pantheon, what would they be like? Would you try to do something completely different or would be closer to what's come before? What kind of story would they have? What sort of characters would they encounter? Would they have a villain to deal with or maybe just their own inner turmoil?

I have two rough ideas.

An Armored Princess

People have been talking for awhile about Disney creating and LGBT Princess, I would not be oppose to that but what about a handicapped Princess? I don't mean someone like Elsa who has some kind of allegory I mean a Princess who actually can't walk? How about that?

A princess that cannot walk without a magical suit of armor that she uses to protect her kingdom from the villain who is trying to take it over. Maybe no one but her closest friends know about it. She's afraid what might happen if every learned she was disabled. I like the idea of a prince of a knight from the outside who comes to help her protect her kingdom and slowly figure out the truth which leads to tension between them. She's afraid of failing her people, he's afraid that she's taking on more than she can handle despite her skills. Maybe her journey is about accepting that everyone needs someone else at some point.

In the last act the villain finds a way to remove the magic from her armor which leaves her helpless under all that steel. She manages to remove her armor and defeats the villain saving the kingdom. I like the idea that after the villain is defeated his fortress/lair is sinking into the sea allowing the prince to step in and rescuing her from drowning while also having the armor lost forever. In the last scene she says she worried what will become of her people now that the armor is gone to which the prince says 'it was never armor that protected them' and then when its revealed to the kingdom that she was disabled they still accept her as their princess.

Also if I could design her character I would have the armor be like a full suit of heavy plate, something like this.

A Princess in an Ivory Tower

If you're unfamiliar with the term, 'the ivory tower' refers to the self imposed isolation common to people who focus on academic or scholarly pursuits. I like the idea of a princess who is more like a scholar or an academic and is so focused on her research, whatever it might be, that everything else in her life is secondary to that goal. She even sees getting married like a chore, something she has to do so she can focus on her work. Eventually the chancellor tries to seize power forcing her out of her academic sanctum and driving her to take control of the situation. Yes the chancellor or whatever seizing power is an old cliche but I was thinking when she confronts him about it he tells her how it would not have been necessary if she hadn't buried herself in her work and was willing to take an active part in running the kingdom, something he had been trying to groom her for.

The story would end with her resolving the situation and ascending to the throne as Queen, realizing how irresponsible she had been by ignoring everything but her work.

So that is my ideas.

What kind of character would you like to see as a Disney Princess?

Make the next Disney Princess a transgirl lesbian and really lean into that idea of what makes a Princess a Princess. Give her elements of classic Disney Princesses like Cinderella, someone who trapped in an abusive household but she meets a fairy godmother who gives her the means to have all she's wanted. A loving family, a true love and her true self.

Self-Indulgent? Of course the Disney Princess Franchise is my favorite Disney Property and I always related more to Arial then I ever did with Aladdin so if you ask me what I want kind of character I want in a Disney Princess, here's your answer. :D

How about a princess in a time of war?
The kingdom is beset by a terrible power bent on world subjugation. A royal's place is not on the front lines and a princess even less. So she spends her time working in the motor pool repairing vehicles for people that will be going to fight?

Dieselpunk inventor who solves her problems with her hard-earned intuitive grasp of math and physics. And also explosives, which counts as physics. Love triangle with a guy who's a chemist and a woman who's a mechanic which ends in polyamory.

The villain is a time traveler from the future. He has incredible advanced tech compared to the setting, but he bought it off the shelf doesn't actually know how it works and can't make more or fix it when it breaks.

Personally I think we need to decide where they are from and work from there.

Can't see Disney going for the polyamory part but I like the overall idea.

Honestly the more I think about it it's more of an edutainment show premise than a Disney princess. We're learning about gear ratios today, kids!

You could still make her some sort of Disney princess, and the direction could go there but could be a bit more action etc., just think there's a lot that's fun and interesting that you could do with the whole idea.

Honestly it's hard for me to think of an original idea that hasn't been done in form. Even in other media.

Like my first thought was American Princess. The daughter of the President. But I am pretty damned sure that was done already. Just can't place it. Mind you I don't watch those types of movies.

Warrior Amazon Princess came to mind before I instantly remembered that character is called Wonder Woman.

Thinking maybe a Victorian Disney Princess that grew up from the slums. But still trying to figure that one out without it being a Mulan copy or too Disney of old where she finds a prince and finds happiness or something. Nowadays, the princess has to find agency within herself and not because a man rescued her. Or you have to write an intelligent script to make that work.
I got nothing to say here.
