Discussing Justice League The Snyder Cut After The Hype

Post by Winter »

Not sure if I'm stepping on anyone's toes here but I honestly don't care for either version of the DC Extended Universe's Justice League. The Theatrical Cut is a forgettable film with nothing to make it standout except for the behind the scenes controversy surrounding Joss Whedon.

But honestly, I don't get the praise the Snyder Cut gets. I heard a lot of people say that if this is the version we got then it would have saved the DCEU and would have been the future of superhero movies that it proved that Snyder was a underrated master director on par with Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg. And when I saw the film myself my first thought was... Huh, this is just as uninteresting as the theatrical cut only longer... and filled with needless slowmo... and not much else.

I mean I do think it's an improvement over what we got but this is a needlessly long film. It's about 4 hours long and it doesn't need to be. I think there's half an hour of slowmo in this movie and it's just kinda annoying after a while. Also, I never found either cut's take on the Flash likable and this was before all the shit Ezra Miller got up to, I just find this version of The Flash to be ANNOYING! At best he'll have a decent scene but that's it and now knowing all the shit the actor got up to it's really awkward how this continuity keeps trying to get me to like this character.

Something I do find interesting is how both version of this film has largely been forgotten. Take a look at Watchmen and that film is still being talked about to this day with the main argument being if the movie was a truly faithful adaptation or not and if it's a good movie on it's own. Or The Avengers from 2012, still talked about to this day and still seen by many as the standard for a crossover.

But Justice League, both the Theatrical Cut and Snyder Cut? After both films came out they were talked about for a bit and then kinda forgotten.

A few days ago I asked a few friends of mine who LOVED The Snyder Cut what they remembered most about the film. What were the scenes that stood out the most to them. And neither of them could really remember much of what happened. They had actually forgotten that Superman didn't wear his more traditional outfit (minus the briefs), couldn't remember any lines outside of Sups' "Do You Bleed" (which wasn't even in the Snyder Cut) and forgot that Darkseid even showed up at the end.

And that seems to be the general consensus, this film which ever cut we're talking about, isn't very memorable. I can't think of a single scene or moment that stood out to me. Not one line of dialogue I can quote by heart (and I can still perfectly remember the opening lyrics of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious even though it's been years since I watched Mary Poppins) or any bit that made me laugh, cry or even scream in anger.

The DCEU's Justice League is, big blur. I don't think it will ever be forgotten but I don't it's going to be remembered like other films.

From what I am told there were a lot of behind a scene trickery for it to be made, one I think most of the cast supported it to spite Wheddon, and atleast Ben Affleck would have never supported it if he thought even a second it would actually happen. Two there. Rumor going around that Snyder paid a company to make it seems more people were talking about it than they actually were, and threw we know for a fact bots were used to artificially drum up interest.

I think it was a fantastic two parter and a Cyborg movie and that if they'd released all three separately, it would have been awesome.

I feel the movie is bloated. Like there was no editing for the movie.

The weird singing for Aquaman at the village wasn't needed at all.

The slowmo could have been greatly reduced and if I recall, it was a significant amount of time for slow mo in the movie.

Could have cut down on Wonder Woman's theme, seemed like she was given that every time she fought. Once would have been sufficient.

I think editing for other scenes could have been sped up or cut down in that this movie could have been a movie below 3 hours, but still keeping all of the important stuff.

I do like it expands on the Flash and Cyborg for the movie. Steppenwolf is far better than the Joss version. Darkseid makes a couple of appearances. Even the Lord of the Rings style flashback fighting against him was nice.

But... So many internal inconsistancies in the movie.

I personally think Synder is overrated.
I got nothing to say here.

I was against the movie since they were suggesting it. Since all it show was random bits from the comics that I knew Snyder would get wrong, and none of them fix the characteristion problems of the first two movies.

That really is the main criticism of Snyder. He really didn't understand the characters specifically Superman and Batman. He just decided to go with what he felt they were. Aquaman and Cyborg were fine. Ezra Miller was the wrong person to be the Flash.

I think that it is considerably worse than the Joss cut and I always have. If you has tasked me to create a cut of this film, I would have ended up with something that looks remarkably similar.

It needs an editor. Simple as that. EVERY scene can be cut in half. Every single one.

I have a fundamental dislike of Snyder's work tbh. Whereas Abrams creates meaningless fluff, Snyder creates pretentiousness.

My favourite example is the scene where Aquaman dives down to Atlantis. Joss has Aquaman walk to the shore with a metal track playing and a beer in hand - end scene. Snyder has a bunch of random people sing OPERA on the shoreline for no effing reason at all. And it just goes on and on. Even after he has left, they are still singing. And THEN (yes, I am not done) one of them lifts his coat to her face and full on smells it. Just takes a big old whiff of it. Like it smells of honey and sugar or something.

And the whole film is like this. The Flash and the burger crumb anyone?
