I know the feeling. Lost my first cat three months ago. He was 15. Had him for 14 years. Then lost my second cat two weeks ago aged 17. First cat i knew was coming. He dropped from a healthy 13 pounder to below 3 pounds. But the second cat he just developed issues six weeks prior. One thing I learned is that I will cremate my future pets because even digging a three foot deep hole for a cat is a pain.
For me, being here and other places keeps my mind off of them. I lived alone for the past 14 years and they kept me company. Now I got nothing. Some day I will go and get another pet but I am not in a hurry.
But we all grieve differently. Take the time you need.

Thank you all for your kind words, they really helped. We've known that this was coming for a while now, my pup, Pond, has been in declining health for a long time now and only last year was diagnosed with diabetes. Thankfully, we knew how much time he had left so there was time to prepare and he wasn't in pain at the end. He had a good long life, we adopted him in 2012 and he was such a character.
Pond was the most stoic dog I had ever seen. This pup wouldn't express that much unless food was somehow involved. This was a problem because often he would have an issue but we wouldn't know about it for weeks or sometimes even months because he never showed any signs that he was hurting. This did, however, make him a good patient for our vet as he would remain still and calm whenever they had to examine him. Never liked going to the vet but he was so well behaved.
Now he didn't start off as super stoic he was a bit more expressive in his younger years. He had the most prettiest walk every and was so stylish when it came to his general movement. I remember one time after he had a bit of surgery (he had a nasty zest on the back of his neck and we had it removed) and as soon as he was better we offered him a treat and he went from laying down to gracefully standing up to strutting over to use and then going into a dance position. And no, he wasn't a show dog as he was to shy around people.
He was a toy poodle, red furred and very much a pack puppy, he LOVED spending time with our other dogs. He also had these funny habits like whenever I would play video games or watch a movie in my room he would sit next to me and stare directly at the screen like he was watching whatever I was watching/playing with great interest.
One of the few times he would express himself is whenever he needed to go out to go potty. And he wouldn't do this by whining to let you know that things needed to be done instead he would get on my bed or on the cough lay flat on his back and start throwing a tantrum while making these funny whiny notices. It sounded like it was trying to imitate a screech owl.
Like I said before, he was a VERY good motivated, he knew what times breakfast and dinner which made it impossible to ever miss feeding time. Pond didn't often bark but when he did you knew it meant FEED ME WOMAN!!!
However, what was always so funny about Pond is that his default state of mind was confusion. Whenever anything happened, regardless if he was being held, waiting for food or going out he was always so confused. And he didn't express this by tilting his head or making funny noises but rather just by just by giving you this side eye look like he was going "What are you doing right now."
This is best shown when, earlier this year, while my family and I were in Florida our vet sent us a picture of her holding Pong and he had that very confused look on his face as he side eyed her trying to figure out what she was doing at that exact moment.
Though one of my most vivid memories of Pond is when he was trying to get Sally, my pup before Pond, to play with him and Sally... had a temper. She could be deadly and one time she was taking a drink and Pond was pocking a her to get her to play. She responded by... trying to rip his head off, she barked and lunged at him but thankfully missed but it scared the living heal out of Pond and he was yelping the whole way to hide under my sister's bed. What made this so funny was what happened after, we had gotten Sally undercontrol and calmed her down and my sister and I looked under the bed to find Pond. And when we spotted him I said "Pond come on out it's safe." And Pond, I shit you now, shock his head in protest so I had to go under the bed to get him out and had to hold him for 15 minutes to reassure him that he was safe.
I love all my dogs and it's always painful when they have to go but I always try to remember the good times and not the last time I will see them, at least for a while. As silly as this sounds I'm hoping to find Pond again when we got to get a new puppy next month. I'd like to think he won't be gone for long and that this is only a brief time away from each other.

Some people (people without pets) often don't seem to understand just how much a member of the family they can be, losing them is very hard. No other one will ever replace them, but can become equally important to you, just in a slightly different way.

Do you have any pictures? I have lost two dogs and three cats so far. I know have a cat and a dog. They do end up becoming family and it hurts to lose them. My last cat Jacon was a grey male and a total flirt. Whenever a woman would come to the house he would warm up to them. He used to give my wife nose kisses every morning. He broke my wife's heart when he died.
